I am prescribed ambien due to my prescribed adderall, sometimes it is hard for me to go to sleep. I have been taking it for about 2-3 months and I took sonata before that. First of all, sonata and ambien are very similar. Sonata (zaleplon) comes in a small two-tone blue capsule while ambien (zolpidem) is a small white tablet. Both drugs act on the same receptor and are classified as a "hypnotic sedative." Generally speaking ambient lasts a slightly longer time than sonata. I was prescribed 20mg a night with sonata but only 10 with ambient. I truly have the best sleep when I do take either one of them, however many of the ideas people have about them are only half truths. I'll concentrate mainly on ambien because it is more widely recognized.
First of all, my doctor tells me that it isn't habit forming, but from personal experience I disagree. By taking it several consecutive nights in a row I find it more difficult to sleep and fall asleep afterwards.
Secondly, it is true you hallucinate if you don't fall asleep. However, it isn't the kind of hallucinations everyone is thinking. There are no psychedelic colors and deforming objects. Think about the label "hypnotic sedative." You will get extremely relaxed (the sedative part.) In addition to that, the only hallucinations I have experienced or heard from personal friends include the following.
1. You find yourself talking in circles about extremely odd subjects and unable to maintain a complete thought.
2. I see "faces," or "heads," but it doesn’t actually see them. It is damn near impossible to explain and I know it sounds ridiculous, but true. If I am in a dark room it’s as if I see silhouettes. Nothing like these LSD comparisons at all. I can't deny ever experiencing LSD, mushrooms, or several other drugs before (all of which I hated,) and believe me this is nothing like it. You can remember and recall all if not most of what you’re eyes visually sees on those substances. If you can imagine calling any of those a "visual" trip that your eyes can actually see, then think of ambien as an "imaginary" trip. What I mean by that is when you see things, or think you see things your eyes don't actually see them but your brain tends to think it does. There is no mental confusion due to the fact if you concentrate you can partially realize what is going on. I guess the one cool thing I see is things slowly fall. Such as my computer screen. It doesn't ooze or morph; it just slowly slides the monitor. Kinda cheesy I know.
3. People talk about Fonz as if he is some pioneer in pushing the limits of ambien with 22.5mg. I can honestly say I have taken 50mg in one night. Definitely not a safe thing to do, but I took it in two different doses. The first one it was dark in my room and I thought I was taking two but when I started doubting it I recounted how many I had left and realized I took 3. Then right when falling asleep my neighbor bangs on the door like crazy. Turns out someone tried to break in or something so I had to stay up with her to file a police report and keep her calm (wasn't easy to do given the ambien.) Some 3-4 hours later I had forgotten I took them before the incident so I again took 2 more. As far as I can tell I didn't even get close to being afraid of something taking a turn to the worse, but I guess that’s how most tragic things happen right?
4. People also talk about drinking before taking them. I can seriously advise against this for a number reasons. First of all, it will greatly reduce the sleep inducing effect of ambien and greatly increase the severity of the side effects. Believe me, coming from first hand experience. Drinking and ambien are a bad decision. As if all the effects weren't bad enough alone, now bring along alcohol and it shoots the bad effects like blackout way up.
In addition to that, McBane hit the nail on the head, with one exception. Even without alcohol it can cause short term amnesia; two-three hour blocks that you have absolutely no memory, but it gets 10 times worse with alcohol.
5. I haven't figured out how and what the proper dosage is for this drug. **Keep in mind this is a personal dosage** for me
5mg - No negative sides, able to sleep lightly
10mg-If you are still awake an hour later, these effects tend to manifest themselves in small ways. Odd thoughts, urges to reorganize your desk or clean the dishes. Still able to sleep fine and may have blackouts on parts of your night. As far as 99% of people that are reading this here is your bit: 10mg is a perfectly safe choice to aide you’re sleeping. All of the side effects are induced by you taking the drug and not going right to sleep.
