Those experieced with Ambien?

Took at 5mg dose last night to sleep and was really amazed by the effects of the drug. Did some research and came up with many people who did hallucinate when they did not go to sleep when the drug was really taking hold. Anyone else experience this hallucination, and if so, how many mg's would it take and how long after taking? I always thought ambien was a relatively light sedative for some reason.

Heh, that sucks. Again, I was really surprised at how intense it was, at a mild dose, considering how many elderly people i know that are on it. I think I may have even read somewhere that the chemical makeup was somewhat similar to a light dose of lsd, although i doubt theres much truth to that

IMO it is the best sleep aid out there. That said, I try and limit my use to avoid becoming dependent on the Ambien. I wake up feeling refreshed and fully rested and it takes me no time to fall asleep after taking it.

I took it a few times. Good stuff. Haven't taken it in a while though and I don't want to take it regularly anyway since it's addictive.

i believe Fonz took 22.5mg of ambiem.... he can def help you out with any questions

i took 10mg last night and i swear i was hearing conversations that weren't really happening and things were getting distorted. i never took LCD but from what i hear about it, i think it's a lighter version of LCD. i slept great though. :D

Ambien works well for me with out that groggy feeling that OTC sleep meds leave me with the next morning. I save it for when I really need it. IMO it is nothing like LSD. It makes me kinda happy just before I go to sleep but no visuals. Try sleeping on a hit of cid. No way...

Guys, how long after ingesting the pill would the hallucinations begin? 2 hours after?

I don't know for sure. I woke up in the middle of the night with some really weird thoughts. - cbeaks

Careful not to ingest ANY alcohol with it. Made that mistake one night and completely blacked out for like 2-3 hours, I didn't remember ANY of those 2-3 hours before I finally passed out. The only evidence of the time was some messages I left on a BUNCH of my buddies cell phones. Sort of funny messaged but it was fucked up shit, I'm sure you can prob die from mixing the 2.

I am prescribed ambien due to my prescribed adderall, sometimes it is hard for me to go to sleep. I have been taking it for about 2-3 months and I took sonata before that. First of all, sonata and ambien are very similar. Sonata (zaleplon) comes in a small two-tone blue capsule while ambien (zolpidem) is a small white tablet. Both drugs act on the same receptor and are classified as a "hypnotic sedative." Generally speaking ambient lasts a slightly longer time than sonata. I was prescribed 20mg a night with sonata but only 10 with ambient. I truly have the best sleep when I do take either one of them, however many of the ideas people have about them are only half truths. I'll concentrate mainly on ambien because it is more widely recognized.

First of all, my doctor tells me that it isn't habit forming, but from personal experience I disagree. By taking it several consecutive nights in a row I find it more difficult to sleep and fall asleep afterwards.

Secondly, it is true you hallucinate if you don't fall asleep. However, it isn't the kind of hallucinations everyone is thinking. There are no psychedelic colors and deforming objects. Think about the label "hypnotic sedative." You will get extremely relaxed (the sedative part.) In addition to that, the only hallucinations I have experienced or heard from personal friends include the following.

1. You find yourself talking in circles about extremely odd subjects and unable to maintain a complete thought.

2. I see "faces," or "heads," but it doesn’t actually see them. It is damn near impossible to explain and I know it sounds ridiculous, but true. If I am in a dark room it’s as if I see silhouettes. Nothing like these LSD comparisons at all. I can't deny ever experiencing LSD, mushrooms, or several other drugs before (all of which I hated,) and believe me this is nothing like it. You can remember and recall all if not most of what you’re eyes visually sees on those substances. If you can imagine calling any of those a "visual" trip that your eyes can actually see, then think of ambien as an "imaginary" trip. What I mean by that is when you see things, or think you see things your eyes don't actually see them but your brain tends to think it does. There is no mental confusion due to the fact if you concentrate you can partially realize what is going on. I guess the one cool thing I see is things slowly fall. Such as my computer screen. It doesn't ooze or morph; it just slowly slides the monitor. Kinda cheesy I know.

3. People talk about Fonz as if he is some pioneer in pushing the limits of ambien with 22.5mg. I can honestly say I have taken 50mg in one night. Definitely not a safe thing to do, but I took it in two different doses. The first one it was dark in my room and I thought I was taking two but when I started doubting it I recounted how many I had left and realized I took 3. Then right when falling asleep my neighbor bangs on the door like crazy. Turns out someone tried to break in or something so I had to stay up with her to file a police report and keep her calm (wasn't easy to do given the ambien.) Some 3-4 hours later I had forgotten I took them before the incident so I again took 2 more. As far as I can tell I didn't even get close to being afraid of something taking a turn to the worse, but I guess that’s how most tragic things happen right?

4. People also talk about drinking before taking them. I can seriously advise against this for a number reasons. First of all, it will greatly reduce the sleep inducing effect of ambien and greatly increase the severity of the side effects. Believe me, coming from first hand experience. Drinking and ambien are a bad decision. As if all the effects weren't bad enough alone, now bring along alcohol and it shoots the bad effects like blackout way up.
In addition to that, McBane hit the nail on the head, with one exception. Even without alcohol it can cause short term amnesia; two-three hour blocks that you have absolutely no memory, but it gets 10 times worse with alcohol.

5. I haven't figured out how and what the proper dosage is for this drug. **Keep in mind this is a personal dosage** for me

5mg - No negative sides, able to sleep lightly

10mg-If you are still awake an hour later, these effects tend to manifest themselves in small ways. Odd thoughts, urges to reorganize your desk or clean the dishes. Still able to sleep fine and may have blackouts on parts of your night. As far as 99% of people that are reading this here is your bit: 10mg is a perfectly safe choice to aide you’re sleeping. All of the side effects are induced by you taking the drug and not going right to sleep.

Anybody interested in getting more knowledge on the subject take your time and do some studying. And research. If nothing else fails, then email

It stoped working for me after about a month. It stoped working no matter what dose I took. After 3 months off it worked again. Techlifter did a good job of describing how it makes you feel.

The hallucinations are a side effect, that is not common at all. I´ve taken it for months now, never experienced any. Neither did some of my friends. It´s not really addictive (unlike Valium or Xanax) and it doesn´t give you a hung over feeling the next day. It knocks me out pretty good at 20mg, but usually 10 will suffice.

Yea its a great thing not having to deal with the hangover the next day, which can ruin most of your day. I already have problems sleeping as is, when i go to the gym at night i see everyone drinking a ripped force or something and wonder how they manage to go to sleep.

After about 2 or 3 days of use Ambien does nothing to me. I have gone almost a month without use untill last night. I took 30mg and did get a pretty strange feeling. Although I was just trying to get to sleep, not get fucked up. The first time I took Ambien I took it with 6mg of Xanax.

That was a very peacefull 14 hours of sleep.

The hallucinations on ambien are nothing like LSD or shrooms. I would even say that LSD and shrooms only give me visuals, where colors and objects distort in and out. Ambien gives me actual hallucinations. One night I took 50 mg of ambien, and I was having conversations with imaginary people! Seriously, it was the strangest thing thats ever happened to me. Its like your awake and dreaming at the same time.

I took ambien for a while and I must say it's not great. Once you take it you start feeling kinda relaxed and uninhibited. I have posted on here while on it and while I didn't say anything extraordinarily stupid or that I didn't mean, it's just weird stuff that is kind of funny to see in the light of day.

The extent of the hallucinations was that I kept imagining in a very subtle way that someone else was in the room or next to me, like I could see them out of the corner of my eye, kind of like everything I was doing was for an audience. If I ever focused on it though I would relize it was just my imagination. Nothing serious.

The first time I took it I had very little recollection of stuff I said or did until someone reminded me of one thing I did. Then I could remember pretty much everything.

The feeling you get from Ambien is pretty fun and I enjoyed coming on here while on it. It is easy to stay awake but also easier to fall asleep while on it.

And the kicker, the reason why I think it stinks: it wonly works for about 4-5 hours. I would take it at like 11 pm hoping for a good night's sleep until 8 am and I would wake up around 3:30 without fail, every time I took the drug. If I ever take another sleep aid I want something that will knock me out for a full 9 hours, which is how much sleep I like to get.

Sonata is in the same class as Ambien but it has a shorter half life (it's out of your system in 4 hours). I take it every once in a while and it works great for me. I never wake up groggy or wearing my wifes clothes. HAHA. It is mainly prescribed for people who have trouble staying asleep but I say it helps me fall asleep as well. You take it 20 minutes before you go to bed.
