This is why I dont understand the heavy use of Kerrys vietnam record in his campaign

Dole used his WWII record during his '96 campaign, and Dole had quite a remarkable WWII career and service record. Clinton left the country during vietnam so he could write letters about how he "loathed the military". We all know how that election turned out, and the disparity between the two in military service far surpasses the differences between Kerry and Bush. So I would think Kerry would take a lesson from Dole's campaign (since Dole lost to a draft dodger) and focus on other issues instead of long ago military service. Dole tried to use it to his advantage during his campaign and it was deemed irrelevant since it was "the past". I wonder if Kerry will have the same outcome?
Also of note: Reagan handed Carter his ass in '80-Carter was a decorated naval officer, Reagan was no in the military.
Bush lost to Clinton in '92-Bush was decorated in WWII-Clinton was draft dodger.

True, but he seems to be pushing Bush as the deliquent Air Guard and not suitable for the war on terror.

Air Guard and Vietnam service should be irrelevant. No matter who is the president, he always gets advice from a battery of top military and security advisors. Their advice and briefings handle the details, the president decides broader policy initiatives, therefore whether or not Kerry has 3 purple hearts or Dole has 5, or Clinton fled to England are of little consequence. Thats part of the reason Dole lost in '96.

simple fact. americans want someone who talks the talk not someon who walks the walk. apparently we would rather have the illusion of courage and toughness rather than someone who actually possesses those qualities.

Such has been the shift of american culture due to the dissemination of the mass media culture.

Personally, I feel like I did in the Bush vs. Gore election. I don't like either one of the motherfuckers. Why, oh' why can't the U.S.A. have a REAL leader for a change? Someone who actually WANTS to take care of the people in this country...

Fuck you, Bush. Fuck you, Kerry. Bitch ass motherfuckers...

I am voting "not bush".
Because of so many people thinking like you I have no doubt that Bush will be re-elected.

Americans understand the constitutional mandate of civilian control of our armed forces. So although military service is a nice trait in a presidential candidate, it is in no way seen as some kind of requirement, especially since America has not undergone a total war effort that required a majority to serve since WWII. Leadership is the key and that can be manifested in many ways: CEO, US Congress or Senate, Education, Military, Law, etc.

It's simple really. Dems come off as soft on defense and can appear wimpy. So they're pushing his whole service time in Vietnam. It's a stupid notion, but a lot of americans are stupid, so they think it will work. It isn't working nor will it work.

Historically, Democrats have been tough on defense.
Roosevelt-Led country through WWII, and definetely wasnt soft in that war.
Truman-annihilated two cities in Japan to end WWII. nuff said.
Kennedy-Stood down the Soviets during the Cuban Missile Crisis. First commisioned the Navy Seals in the US.

So actually what you're saying is that historically, up until 1970 or so. Many have left the democratic party for the GOP because they have become very liberal since the days of Harry Truman.

I was speaking in broader terms. But you are probably correct, modern day liberalism has taken the bite out of the Dems positions regarding defense.

He got three purple hearts and yet none of the injuries were significant enough to warrant a single day in a hospital. After recieving his third, he went home early. Voting wont do any good anymore, emmigrate.

articulate and coherent. He should really drink more often, say, like when he gets in front of congress to ask for money or to give the state of the union address.

why is he touting his vietnam record when he came back and admitted to committing war crimes himself, lied about the fellow soldiers he served with, is in the vietnam hall of heros (in vietnam) next to people like jane fonda, had his speeches played to real soldiers staying in POW camps, etc?

the man is a fraud and a joke. he will never see the presidency.
