Saudi court ups punishment for gang-rape victim

(CNN) -- A court in Saudi Arabia increased the punishment for a gang-rape victim after her lawyer won an appeal of the sentence for the rapists, the lawyer told CNN.

The 19-year-old victim was sentenced last year to 90 lashes for meeting with an unrelated male, a former friend from whom she was retrieving photographs. The seven rapists, who abducted the pair and raped both, received sentences ranging from 10 months to five years in prison.

The victim's attorney, Abdulrahman al-Lahim, contested the rapists' sentence, contending there is a fatwa, or edict under Islamic law, that considers such crimes Hiraba (sinful violent crime) and the punishment should be death.

"After a year, the preliminary court changed the punishment and made it two to nine years for the defendants," al-Lahim said of the new decision handed down Wednesday. "However, we were shocked that they also changed the victim's sentence to be six months in prison and 200 lashes."

The judges more than doubled the punishment for the victim because of "her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media," according to a source quoted by Arab News, an English-language Middle Eastern daily newspaper.

Judge Saad al-Muhanna from the Qatif General Court also barred al-Lahim from defending his client and revoked his law license, al-Lahim said. The attorney has been ordered to attend a disciplinary hearing at the Ministry of Justice next month.

Al-Lahim said he is appealing the decision to bar him from representing the victim and has a meeting with Justice Minister Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Ibrahim Al Al-Sheikh on Monday.

"Currently she doesn't have a lawyer, and I feel they're doing this to isolate her and deprive her from her basic rights," al-Lahim said. "We will not accept this judgment and I'll do my best to continue representing her because justice needs to take place."

Al-Lahim said he wanted the Justice Ministry to take "a very clear standing" on the case, saying the decision is "judicial mutiny against reform that King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz started and against Saudi women who are being victimized because of such decisions."

Women are subject to numerous restrictions in Saudi Arabia, including a strict dress code, a prohibition against driving and the need for a man's permission to travel or have surgery. Women are also not allowed to testify in court unless it is about a private matter that was not observed by a man, and they are not allowed to vote.

The Saudi government recently has taken some steps toward bettering the situation of women in the kingdom, including the establishment earlier this year of special courts to handle domestic abuse cases, adoption of a new labor law that addresses working women's rights, and creation of a human rights commission.

CNN was unable to reach government officials for comment.

that is fucking ridiculous. tells you the kind of world we live in.

Welcome to the Muslim world.......it still works like that in alot of places. I would sooner die than live under that kind of filthy law............it really makes me wish religion would disappear from this realm. Can't happen soon enough.

Eh, who are we to impose our laws and ways of thinking onto other countries?

... oh yeah, we're America. It's in our job description, lol.

I don't find anything wrong with enforcing human decency. Its pretty clear what type of shit is BACKWARDS (hint, ask yourself, was it acceptable centuries ago?) and what is better for overall human happiness.

We are far from perfect as a country too. I have heard conservatives talk about violent and gruesome punishments for rapists here in the US (luckily we have laws against that sort of emotional response).

I remember a few people on here who thought Michael Vick should be tortured and shit for what he did to dogs.

agreed, just don't come here with your talk of sharia law and caliphs......keep that filth in the middle east where it was born and deserves to stay and rot, along with all the bastard offspring of the old testament.

Flaw being that each country has their own version of what should be enforced, what is backwards, and what is better for overall human happiness.

i think the best one is the saudi female commercial helicopter pilot who has to take a taxi b/c she cannot drive a car.....

the flaw is that not every country develops at the same rate, and those who develop slower still fall victim to themselves.

Even those muslim countries have made progress. Notice no death penalties handed out in that case?

They are just farther behind. Even we were still executing people publicly within the past 200 years.

Okay, so if we had an advanced country of Christians versus an advanced country of Muslims, how would things be different?

If people were so inclined, they could interpret the Koran and the bible IN EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. So the difference is in the culture. Right now they are poor and in poorer countries fundamentalism get's more fundamental. If they were advanced like we are they would be more lax too because there's money to made. Imagine if we were run "completely" fundamentally christian.........how many industries wouldn't even exist? Of course, the middle class would still have a more fundamental enforcement placed on them whereas the upper class elite would still be getting away with the things they do. Look at the Saudis'...........in the Royal palace's things go on that would get you killed right down the street. So in the end, it's all fucked and means nothing.

There is no such thing as an advanced country of muslims.

it depends if the govt is secular or a theocracy--i think they predict that many western european countries will be populated by a majority of muslims by 2050--does that mean they will cease to be advanced?

yeah, we should leave em alone..........did I contradict myself? I don't think so..........you just don't listen me. I never proffessed love for those people, in fact, quite the opposite. But I can see where fucking with them does us no good........it's pointless. We're not the worlds cops.

Rome was the World's police, most of their legions were in place to keep trade routes open. Brittania's Navy was in place to do the same thing. It falls upon us to do that today.

"rape victim going to jail" or "Violator of the law goes to jail". These are both true statements. Yours is just pulling on more heartstrings.

I didn't read the post, but briefly saw it on CNN today. She broke the law and is getting punished for it. The fact that she got raped is a whole other issue. If she had Cancer would the headline say Cancer victim/rape survivor goes to jail?

She broke the law, she's going to jail. I don't agree or disagree with it. I'm just pointing it out.

Rome was scum bor.......pure utter imperialist filth!! Keep trade routes open........NIGGA FUCKIN PLEASE!!! If you beleive that I have beachfront property in Nevada I'm just dyin to offload.... It was about DOMINANCE.......no more no less. Tax money flowing up the great pyramid into Rome's coffers...........DO NOT DARE THINK OTHERWISE!!! They were fetid scum that authorized the rape and pillage of people by their legions to "affect submission". Not being involved in it but authorizing it is EXACTLY THE SAME!! Nobody joined Rome because "they thought it was a good idea befitting of the people".......they joined because to do otherwise would mean a Roman legion, a mercenary scum army that was enticed by plunder, would come and rape the entire region. Nothing enobling about that old place...........nor with any empire in the history of man. Read this guru............EMPIRES THROUGHOUT THE HISTORY OF MAN ARE WHY THE WORLD IS FUCKED TODAY!!! When one empire fails another is soon to take it's place because humans for the most part are a filthy species that see's an incessant need to fill power vaccuums, dominance, control.........so one can sit in an ornate bath and have one's cock sucked by nubile young boys and girls!!! Thinking anything less is naivete! We've suckered into glorifying the old Roman empire because they're responsible for perpetuating christianity. If only Attila would have pushed on...................oh wait, it would still be the same shit.........humans are humans afterall eh?

didn't they rape the dude too? I think I read that.............so 2-7 years for gangbangin two people? I would have thought a muslim court would have been VERY harsh with this. They have a history for dealing out beheadings for alot less.

Her law breaking entailed meeting an unrelated male and speaking to the media.

And I didn't intend for this thread to become a discussion on whether or not the US should be the worlds police man. Some guys went off on that tangent rather quickly.

It was just a post on how fucked up the justice system is in some countries.

The Romans were the dominant power in the world, but the forward projection of power allowed commerce to thrive. Even if you think they were decadent, greedy and abusive, they did keep goods flowing from point A to point B through strength of arms. The vacuum that followed the collapse of the Empire caused trade to disintegrate bringing on the Dark Ages.
