Thinking about taking Kung Fu

I'm going this Wednesday to my first Kung Fu class actually my first martial arts class period i want to know some stuff about kung fu first how does it compare to other martial arts and the stuff i will be learning will it be useful if i need it in a real fight i have been thinking of taking some kind of martial arts class for awhile now but just not sure which one would be best for me i'm 6'3 215 lbs and i was just curious you never see a chinese man over 6' so will that be a problem if any of you know of some informative websites that would be helpful

Well , You have left open as LOT of Factors here , the first being "Kung Fu"

The phrase tends to be used by Americans to mean "Any Chinese Martial Art , and there are HUNDEREDS of Chinese Martial Arts ! Some of them are good , some of them Suck , and most are somwhere in between . WHy dont you tell us whom youre studying with , and perhaps where yorue from ? This way we can help you to know if there might b better options in your Location , or if youve found a Gold mine !

And dont worry too much about the Size thing , if something works for a small person itl generally work for a Larger one .

Thats retarded .

If the guy lives next door to Carlson Gracie , maybey he will , but if he lives next door to Chen Xiaowang hell get more out of Tai Chi . Student's Effort < Teacher < Style

***EDIT***

Not to MENTION that If he wants Mobility , Escapes , Trickery , Explosive Power and good Kicks and Punches he WAY better off going with Bagua , Wushu or Capoeira than he is going with BJJ , wich is better for LEOs and ppl that want to Contain a fight to a particular area and will hve greater numbers , OR for MMA Fights .

Kung FU sucks dont fucking take it. You'll regret it. Its the worst thing ever conceived by mankind.

I kid! I hope you find a good school in your area, and make sure it teaches alot of sparring, and conditioning! Also SanShou takedowns pwn j00.

The only answer you need:

Take what you enjoy, regardless of what is "effective" or "the best for your body type".

Chances are, your will more than likey never be in a self defense situation, and I'm pretty sure you'll never be a professional UFC fighter. So, take what interests you.

You like Kung fu? take it.

You like Judo? giver.

Interested in Tai Chi? Go wild.

There's a lot of emphasis these days on BJJ and Muay Thai because of UFC/K1/Pride. This isn't a bad thing, by any means; but there's more to martial arts than kicking someone's ass.

Point is, check it out, and if you like it, continue. If not, move on. Be opne to different martial arts, regardless of what you hear. Everyone else's opinion means sweet fuck all. Only yours matters. ;)

Any martial art is only as good as the teacher who teaches it correctly, and the diligent hard working student who can apply it. I'm a die-hard kung fu man myself, but I will be the first to tell you to think twice about it. Why? Cause most kung fu instructors suck. Join only if you see real contact. No, I don't mean kick boxing either. "Real" kung fu can be applied and "actually" looks like kung fu when you're kicking someones ass. Most kung fu schools just practice forms all day long. Find out first by observing. If no one ever throws a punch or kick at you in the class at all - you will know exactly what it's worth. Nothing.

First ask yourself why are you taking martial arts and what is your goal you want to reach. Then find a school that fits your goal or criteria stick with it for 2 months and if you feel that this in not really what your looking for then leave and find another school. I went to 5 different martial art schools before I found the one that was right for me. Actually I got kicked out of those 4 schools untill my teacher (Sifu) found me and took me in. Actually he kicked my ass but thats a different story lol.

Well the school is sam smiths martial arts school in bowling green, ky i live in tn i know the instructor spent like six years at some school in miami and went to china to study with some real monks w/ the school well at least thats what one of his students told me i'm going to go today and just check the place out i think the guy told me it is san shou but i'm not positve on the style i want to become a better fighter and do something to help relieve stress i have been lifting weights for about 4 years now and i'm getting tired of doing just that

that's good if it's san shou that means there wil be sparring

Yes, bullshit sparring that is. San Shou is a bullshit form of sparring. Sloppy as hell. And usually has absolutely zero in common with the forms that are being taught. And just because someone goes to China means jack. Real kung fu is very hard to find and that's why kung fu is ridiculed so much. If you learn how to fight using techniques from the forms themselves (that's what forms are for - reminders of fighting techniques) then you will actually be learning something real. Not some flashy looking fluff.

dude prepare for an encylopedia response from Djimbe in 5...4....3...

HEs just luckyt its my Birthday today , AND I have to do like 9000 things ...

I WILL Thrash him in Novel-Length form later , however .

I love Kung Fu! I have taken many different forms of martial arts since I was seven and Kung Fu is my favorite. You need to know whether you are taking an internal or external style as there are some very inportant differences between the two. In my opinion internal southern styles are the best.

thx for the help i went wed. and didn't have time to take a class but i did talk to the instructor and i know looks aren't everything but he was about 50 lbs overweight i would think someone serious about fighting would try to keep thin for speed and that kinda thing but i'm going for class tommorow morning so i will see what its like i have made up my mind if there is no sparring within the first three weeks i will just go to golds gym and do kickboxing i'm not much on kicking and punching air

You know from my experience most styles that are worth anything will not let you spar till you reach a certain level. How can they let you spar when you dont know what you are doing. It shouldt take forever to get to sparing but I think 3 weeks is a little too soon to start when you have no experience.

I saw some televised sanshou that looked alright
I've seen a lot of mma fighters who airplaine their arms does that mean if you train to fight in the cage your punch technique automatically sucks?

wow i cant believe how great some of these posts where and then how messed up some other ones were as well..
you cant say san shou is crap or the sparring is bad and know what you are talking about.. it is better then most rulesets out there imo

ive watched professional san shou and it is awesome great to watch and you have to see how easily it would help on the street.. its got striking from a distance clinch work and throws/takedowns... they stop once they hit the ground so its not 100% complete.. boohoo.. half the throws i see those guys do would KO someone in a self defense situation and you dont need to seek out a 100% complete style to be effective you just have to be good at what you are effective at. or do some cross training.. but most san shou guys i know also train w/ ground techniques..

DJimbe: happy bday man i hope you had a good one!

Actually , My wifes Father ended up having to have a quintuple Bypass that day , and so I basically have no Birthday this year ... Thankfully theres always Next Year , damnit .

And it appears that its the best thing that could have happened for him , so his old Racist ass will be around for a while , and that makes Gina happy , so Im happy in turn .

You could always speed up the process with a rear naked when no ones watching...

OH SHUT UP !

San Shou IS A RULESET !

Here are the Rules that I googled at Random :

Lei Tai (Full Contact Demonstration) Rules 2005

Lei Tai fighting is designed to challenge the upright or vertical aspect of a fighters skills to include free-movement punching and kicking as well as the clinch takedown/throwing skills; this is not mixed martial arts or grappling and therefore no ground-fighting is allowed.

1. Contestants will fight on a 24 square foot [24' x 24'], 16" high Lei Tai.

Lei Tai platform is generally carpeted without padding, no ring stations or ropes surrounding platform. Some padding on floor along platform with volunteer spotters. Only person on the platform besides fighters is the Referee. Judges sit off and away from the platform.

2. Competitors must use headgear, gloves, mouthpiece, and groin cup. Female competitors must also wear a chest protector. [Headgear is ProForce caged gear; if both fighters agree, laceless shoes or taped laced shoes or martial shoes may be utilized - otherwise fighters are barefoot. No cup, no fight. No mouthpiece, no fight. Shirts may be provided/available. No taping or wraps of hands or fingers allowed. No forearm or shin guards allowed. No more than 2 corner men allowed, with spit bucket, water, and towel suggested.

3. Elimination rounds will be 1 1/2 minutes each. The final fight in each division will have 2-minute rounds. The victor must win two out of three rounds. [Demo fights go three rounds unless one fighter is clearly overwhelmed, withdraws, or is injured. For demo fights there will not be any tiered fights - one pre-scheduled fight for each fighter. Center Referee may call time-outs for equipment malfunctions or injury that require medical evaluation.]

4. Scoring:

n Contestant executes clear [power] punch or kick - 1 point.
n Contestant executes clear punch or kick that knocks opponent down - 2 points.
n Without falling, contestant successfully throws opponent to the ground - 2 points.
n [If throw results in both contestants falling, and initiating fighter lands on top with control- 1 point
n Contestant forces or throws opponent off Lei Tai - 3 points.
n Through own error, contestant loses balance - 1 point deduction
n Contestant executes clear elbow/knee technique without holding - 1 point
n [Contestant executing clear elbow/knee to legal areas while holding are allowed but no points scored]

1. Points:

n Competitor with most points at end of each round wins round; 3rd round may be optional if opponents are clearly mismatched]

n [There are no points for attempted throws, or attempted takedowns, but in case of close decision, fighters aggressiveness and forward pressure (ABC's Always Be Closing) is taken into account]

n [No scoring for clinches, and Center Referee will stop unproductive clinches after 3-5 seconds; Referee can also give warning and even disqualification for excessive clinches that are used to stall or regain strength]

n [There is no points given to ground-fighting and once one or both contestants touch the ground with any part of the body besides the feet, the Center Referee will stop the action and then restart in the same area or move both contestants back to the center.]

2. Penalties:
+ Contact to the eyes, throat, back of the head, [spine and kidney area] or groin is illegal. For female competitors, contact to the chest is also illegal.
+ [contact to the outside or front of the knee is illegal]
+ [inside thigh contact is illegal]
+ outside thigh contact is legal
+ [kicks to shin and calf are legal but score no points]
+ Techniques using the head are illegal.
+ Joint locking to knees, elbows, etc. of any kind is illegal will not be tolerated]
+ Fouls:

1. First violation: 1 point deduction
2. Second violation: 3 point deduction
3. Third violation: disqualification
+ Technical Fouls:

4. First violation: warning
5. Second violation: 1 point deduction
6. Third violation: disqualification

5. Competitors who maliciously hurt their opponents will be held liable for any damages or injuries. The executive referee has full authority to stop the fight at any time for safety or any other reason.

So , basically its Muay Thai rules with Throwing and Ring Outs (ala Sumo) .

So PLEASE would you explain to me how the Punches , Kicks , and Throws that I Unleash upon my victims are LESSER in a San Shou Ruleset than they would be in a MT one , or a MMA one ? Do I punch weaker or slower than if I CALL it "Boxing" ? Do I Lose Technique instantly ? San Shou allows you to Wrap your Opponent up and Drop him on the base of his own Spine while you Drive down on top of him . Hows that "Bullshit" , exactly ? Ive seen DOZENS of ppl transported to the Hospital in ONE DAY of the Kuoshu tournament . YOU may have chosent to fight like a Pussy WITHIN the Ruleset , but please tell me which one ois better . Its the best Sparring Ruleset to prepare you for REAL Fighting .

And just because someone goes to China means jack. Real kung fu is very hard to find and that's why kung fu is ridiculed so much.

No , "Real Kung Fu" may be hard to find but the reason its Ridiculed is because of Chop Saki flicks , The way that the Chinese Language translates into English , BEcause the Chinese were looked upon as a virtual Slave Class for so long , and Bruce Lee . And honestly , "Real Kung Fu" isnt THAT hard to Find , I find it for ppl every day , all over the World . Most pplk that denegrate "Kung Fu" , or even REFER to CMA as "Kung Fu" have not one effing CLUE as to what it is that theyre on about .

If you learn how to fight using techniques from the forms themselves (that's what forms are for - reminders of fighting techniques) then you will actually be learning something real. Not some flashy looking fluff.

No , The forms are there to help your body absorb the movements themselves , and the Flavour of the movements . Theyre there to help you learn HOW to move , and to develop Body Harmony , Timing , and your own Rythym . Theyre there for the same Reason Shadowboxing is there .
