the problem with having a workout partner

i usually lift alone,go in do my thing and leave.last week a friend of mine asked me if he could lift with me,he is a reagular at the gym therefore i assumed he was serious about training.we go in at 5am and this guy did not shut up,he knows alot of people and he did nothing but bullshit.i have no problem with a little talking but when your waiting for your partner to do his set and he talks for 5min man this shit burns me up.i guess alot of people go to the gym just to talk,i really hate to hurt his feelings but i take this shit serious and dont have time to shoot the shit for an hour, disrespectfull imo.back to lifting solo.

Yeah, sounds like you need a hardcore training partner.

I hear that the hottest new gift on the market for christmas is "Hardcore Buddy" to help you get through your workouts.

i'm kinda surprised that a guy who works out at 5am insn't serious about training.

i would suggest putting headphones on -- that should help minimize his chattering

maybe ditch him?

My suggestion: start working him hard on spotting you for some extra forced reps. Put some punishment on him.
kinda tried that and it backfired,i pyramid on bench and this guys max is like 225.when i got up to like 315 he decides he can do it and needless to say it was a forced rep for me getting it off of him.i did have him pukeing on leg day though.lol

Dang, I thought this would be a sure fire way to get him. I hate working overtime like that when spotting. That is the problem when working out with someone who is too different in strength.

Have you tried just beating the crap out of him? :p

there is no way in the world u can change someone who isn't serious enough. only he can do that himself. i wish i had a good training partner- it must be a real boon. i have to lift solo instead.

agreed,i am going solo again.i have lifted solo for years and dont really mind.just cant do thoese forced reps, but what i do on some exercises like bench press is set the squat rack up slide a flat bench under it,then ajust the saftey bars where the barbell comes about an inch off my neck.this has saved me more than once.

I used to like having a training partner when I had something to train for ie; competition...now I put my headphones on with an array of music to workout by and go to it....I socialize a bit before and after workouts, but not during...I get people who want to train with me every day which is nice, but I try to steer clear of it, Iam at the point now, I would rather workout by myself and get into my music and "zone-in".....

i hate partners, i like to go to the zone too . . . Either it's a nightmare like this thread, or the weights are too different, or whatever; I'd just rather focus. But I could see how a good partner might help, I just never found someone in the same groove. But, freakazoid, this guy sucks ass, ditch him, he's slowing you down . . .

Damn, I am so thankful for meeting up with a good bro at my gym to lift with. It's always nice to have that perfect spot.
