it used to be that a lot of it was owed domestically. . .but not anymore.

a great deal of it is in u.s. treasury bonds. . .the interest rate changes regularly, as set by the fed. anyone can buy a treasury bond, although, i believe the smallest increment is $25,000.

what did we borrow it for? operating capital. . .

who are we paying? the bond holders. . .

Either way, with our economic structure such as it is, we wont pay it off any time over the next thousand years.
