I use it as positive reinforcement.

For example, I would not allow myself to use any marijuana unless certain milestones were met. Finishing a project or paper for college. Cleaning my bathroom. Running certain errands. Etc.

I find it to have the exact opposite effect on my behavior.

I can't live with people who leave dishes in the sink or out.

I live with one other person now, and we never leave any dirty dishes around, anywhere. The rare exception is if the washer is running. If its full of clean, we'll empty it asap. Whomever gets to it. Same with taking out the trash. Its really easy when everyone makes an effort to do MORE than their share of work.
