The Leg Press Mafia.....

I thought this would better be served in the chat area than weights so that's that.

I went and worked out today and as I was warming up on the squats I noticed these 3 guys crowded around a 45 degree leg press. They had 4-100lbs plates on each side. 800lbs huh? Very nice, if they can move it through a full range of motion.

Now each of these guys are over 6' tall, but none of them look like they even work out really. Their legs definitely don't convince me they can leg press that. Sorta like when I see a 160lbs guy load 315 on the bar only to do 1/4 squats like I thought.

So there they are bangin out literally 5" range of motion reps. I'm serious. These were the funkiest reps I've ever seen anyone perform on the leg press and I've seen some short ROM reps before. So I'm like whatever.

Then they pull off the overshirts to reveal the tank top leg pressin mafia. Now they're getting serious.

Now they throw on 3-4 45's on each side of the bar so they're up to like 1160lbs. Man, these guy's should look like animals, but you can barely tell they lift? Gee, does it have anything to do with the range of motion? I wonder?

So they pep talk each other and start grunting and congratulating each other. Then one of them say's "It's time to hit the real weights".

So then they slap on like 2 more 45's on each side for a whopping grand total of 1340lbs. So they're all pumped up walking around with puffed chests like they're big shit. By this point there's about 5-6 guy's around the general area watching the show and I swear to god that just me and one of my powerlifting buddies realized how big a assclown's these guy's really are.

So now they're really going for it. One of them says to the other "Hey man, I'll spot you. That's alotta weight bro".

Guy hops into the machine and declares that he'll bust out 10 reps.

Now imagine setting up for the leg press, unlocking the catches and lowering the weight about 4" literally. Guy succeeds! What an animal! He just busted out 1340lbs for 10 reps on the leg press! What a feat!

Not only did he and his buddies make a complete ass of themselves, but they don't even know it. They'll probably brag about it at work.

I would bet a $1000 dollars that none of the 3 could do a single raw full squat with 275lbs and that's being REAL generous on the weight lmfao! Probably not even a single 250lbs raw full squat.

What a comedy show tonight it was!

So there you have it. The tale of the leg press mafia.

I do full range of motion with over 1,000 pds. Does it look like it?

hey, let them feel good. they won't grow and waste their time, but it's funny to watch.

Me and my buddy didn't say anything to them the whole time lol.

A guy I know comes up to me and goes man, that's alot of weight. Couldn't tell if he was joking or being serious so I looked him dead in the eye and said it's all about how you move that weight lol.

biteme, you got some good quads. As to whether or not they look like they can press that much weight. It's hard to say from a picture, but I'd say ya. Nice developement and size, but it's hard to get an idea of how big they actually are in real life. Let me guess, 29-30" at the top?

But, I really dont care what anyone can leg press. I haven't done any leg presses in a couple months and have never done them for more than a couple weeks at a time. Even when I haven't trained in months I can put on 650-700 and bang out full range reps. The real question is how much can those legs squat?

I used to be able to leg-press 945lbs for 27 reps, legs forming a 90 degree angle at the bottom of the movement. Not really sure if that's good or not. (This was after a back injury I got playing football eliminated squats from my workout permanently)

Sounds good to me as long as the range of motion is good. 90 degrees on the 45 leg press is good I think. Any more and you risk rounding out your back.

I'm not saying that a large leg press number isn't impressive, but it's not as good of an indicator of real strength as squats are, but if you have back issues obviously you can't squat safely.

Anyhow, those are impressive numbers both of you guys if you're going to 90 degrees and obviously you're both strong.

I'd rather see someone leg press 500 strictly to 90 than load on 800 and do 5" ROM presses.

Same for squats.

I just couldn't help, but post this encounter with the leg press mafia haha.

Kinda reminds me of this guy that loads 500lbs on the bar and does 1/4 squats lol.

God, I fuckin hate that kind of shit. I was training at a lame foo-foo gym for a while because it was close to where I was living, and I swear the place was full of dumb fucks like that. The worst part is that I've had people ask me how much I squat and I tell them I rep 355 and a lot of them will tell me that they can do that or more(they are always scrawny to average built guys ages 16-21 or 30-45yrs old), or they'll tell me that they expected that I did more than that because their 40yr old friend at the raquet club can do that. I'm like yeah fuckin right, try going down more than a few inches and I'll watch your puny legs buckle and you fall on your ass. These same guys are the same ones that always ask "how much do you bench", its like they are always in competition with me or something, I don't care much for the average joe blow, who trains 2 days a week and does cardio on the treadmill all seven, and buys the latest craze supplement from GNC, and brags to everyone in the lunch room at the office that they benched 315 the other day(not mentioning that they had 2 spotters taking off 100lbs on the way up). Touchy subject for me. These are the same guys that flood the gyms every January for new years resolutions to get a six pack for spring, and quit after 3 weeks. Its a shame, but the average guy always attempts to brag around either girls they want to impress or other guys they feel intimidated or threatened by. I don't hang out with a lot of people anymore because more often than not they turn out to be the above mentioned or player hating-cock blockers. I'm sick of it. I wish most people weren't like that and could just keep it real.

These no-ROM motherfuckers should all be shot, with the full-body movement too-heavy seated rowers following closely behind them.

Ya, it's pretty damn funny.

I see guy's all the time saying they can squat anywhere from 295-365 for reps. Most of these guys are between 150-180lbs generally. Their size, build and leg developement pretty much always shows they can't.

They didn't actually have shirts that said leg press mafia. I just nicknamed them that haha.

I agree canadianhitman, they should be shot, or slowly dragged down a long gravel path.

I have four teens come into the gym I use and crowd around the Smith machine to do communal bench. The two spotters usually get a better workout than the guy lying down. Still, it's good to see team spirit.

We got some at my gym, that don't even release the catches when they leg press. Yeah... fucking right. they just push up from the starting position to full extension, which is like only 2 inches. Growling... practically foaming at the mouth the whole time.

LOL at the Leg Press Mafia

I've got a group of guys at my gym who wear do-rags, jeans, hiking boots & wife-beater shirts to work out & yell a lot -- I call 'em "The Prison Crew."

no. good point.

1,365 pounds is alot tho, i bet if i unnotchracked it and started to lower it 4 inches it would come crashing down

and i can raw squat 250 below parrell

I must suck at leg press. the most i ever put on there is 8 plates a side. i go higher reps though, like 15-20. i would think i could do more when i squat around 455.

You squat around 455 - is it deep or not?

That's great.

I don't really know how much I can leg press. I use the press after squats....

I'd be more impressed with a 500lbs raw full squat than a 1000lbsx10 leg press, but that's just me.

Both are solid though and show a high degree of leg strength performed properly.

People love to take that back pad and adjust it upward so they limit thier range of motion from the get go. Leg press is not a short range of motion if you adjust the back pad downard so your hips don't tilt at the bottom of the movement. So I agree with everyone else that adjusting the back pad upward and then doing a 4 inch leg press is silly. You've limited your range of motion by misadjusting the machine.

I don't think their is much carry over from leg press to squat...

If it was up to me, i would sweep all the leg machines out of my gym and add a few more racks and a glute-ham machine...

word, i noticed that too. everytime i get to the machine it's always a few notches up, which makes it way easy. i plop that thing all the way down. i'm almost looking at the roof at that point, lol. i find it to be alot harder that way and even hits my quads more.
