The Feds are all over the boards!

sk*, just because source code is visible does not necessarily mean that the encryption is flawed. The source code for the most successful encryption app of all time, PGP, used to be published. It was available for anyone to look at. Now that they've sold out to a commercial endeavor, word has it that there is now a back door built in. Of course, the source code is now unavailable for the commericial product. But my point is, modern encryption work off mathematical algorithms that do not rely upon the source code being compiled. In other words, its strength lies in its mathematics, not its "code".

As for feds watching the board: why not assume they are? If it's possible, you'd be a fool to ignore this possibility. And ranting at the agents is a waste of time; they do their jobs just like the rest of us. I don't say, "Let's kill anyone who delivers Budweiser!" if I disagree with legalized alcohol sales; Budweiser delivery guys are just doing their dman jobs! I go to my local politicians and say, "Make this a dry county." (I drink, so this is just an example, but you get my point.) :D

If you don't like what they're doing, complain to the RIGHT source. Voting booths and lobbyists offices are good places to start...

I know what you are talking about. I have a very long history with programming, the internet, and somewhat with encryption. What you say applies to passwords and small phrases as they are then encrypted on the computer, and you can decrypt it only if you know the password itself. Linux password encryption is based on this method.

What you say does not hold true for encrypted emails as you don't have to know what is in the email before reading it. That should make sence, but I may have worded it wrong.

I haven't directly looked into the hushmail encryption, but I assume this is what it does:

For writing emails:
1) You write the email
2) You hit send and at this time it uses an encryption algorythm which is in the java code itself to apply to your email.
3) The client send the email just like any other email, except now it is encrypted.

For reading emails:
1) Client recieved encrypted email.
2) Uses an algorythm that is written within the client to do the simple encryption. It is all in there in the applet
3) The client displays whatever it encrypts.

I agree with what you say in this portion of your post though ...

Not counting some people who *may* have inside information, logic tells us that there are regular visitors that are feds.

Well hopefully it's been an educational experience for them. :)

i'm sure there are feds here, but people seem to be sure they know who they are. doesn't really matter nobody here uses illegal substances, heck half the people here don't even work out.

Nobody knows who they are except them.

The point is a Fed is not going to come on here and act like Satanic Goatslayer or bikinimom.

They are going to come on here and act like a straight up bro with knowledge and try to gain our trust.

Or maybe they aren't even using the board to try to catch people but they are just doing research to get the lingo down and so they don't look stupid when they're on a buy or whatever.

Here's a question for you: if you were a Fed on here trying to gain trust, and you saw this thread, would you post on it?

I'm not going toread through this entire thread, but the last time I tried to change my profile email I was locked off the boards for 3 days. And we all know that I can't stay away from the boards for THAT long...I am afraid to change it again as that may happen again....
