The Effects of Drinking Alcohol While Training???

So what does it do and why is it so bad?
Later Ben

It dehydrates you, fills you up with empty calories. For me it brings the desire to break my diet and eat whatevers in site. 5 or 6 beers = 5-700 extra calories :(

forget beer. drink rum. Captain Morgan Private Stock to be exact. 0 carbs in rum.

alcohol is not good all the time its ok sparingly, if you cant fight the urge to not eat alcohol how are you gonna maintain a strict diet if you want?

I drink three times a week and am still pretty lean. I'm not near "big" though. It's a choice...you can either be obsessed and not drink and never cheat on your diet, or you can choose to have a good time and still keep yourself good looking. I tend to think most people on this site fall into the first category. But personally I think there's a hell of a lot more to life than training.

By the way, specifically, alcohol lowers test. levels and contains a lot of empty calories. It also dehydrates your system pretty badly unless you drink a ton of water.

yeah what ppl usually do before they drink is take a multi, some ZMA and some aminos, and drink lots of water...i personally dont drink bc it doesnt do much for me and i always seem to fuck up something when im drunk, like my life. oh yeah and i take medicine that when mixed with alcohol can kill, so i dont drink. just thought id share that bc ppl i hang out with criticize me for not drinking.

Empty calories.
Dehydrated the body.
Depresses the CNS.
Wasted money.
Lowered testosterone levels.

You can't eat alcohol...

It's not okay at all, ideally. Sure, it's unreasonable to tell someone never to drink, but don't go saying it's okay in moderation. Even a drink will have an adverse effect in some way. I don't see it doing anything productive for your body.

That's not to say I will oppose a drink once in a while, to lighten the mood with friends and relax. It's just not an all the time thing, but it's still never beneficial to you.

Never said I needed alcohol to have fun. I have had a recent period of over 6 months where I haven't had more than a drink or two every few weeks.

Looking forward to some ridiculous drunken monkey sex on thursday though. :)

I think it's a personal choice. In terms of diet, why not just eat a few loaves of white bread each weekend? That's how I look at it. In terms of lifestyle and whatnotm I guess it all depends on your goals and your wants/needs. Psilo - if drinking isn't hurting your progress and it is a part of your life - go for it! Personally, it does nothing for me anymore. All it does it depresses me for 2 days afterwards and makes it very very hard for me to follow my diet.

I'd say that I probably have on average 7 beers a week...either in a pub or at home with a meal. I also have a mixed drink 2-5x a week here at home. Recently I've been mixing a can of Shark (like Red Bull) with some lime drink concentrate and/or diet 7-up, a splash of orange, and either 2 shots of Jose Cuervo or 2 shots of Southern Cyprus (like Southern Comfort).

Nothing wrong with a few drinks a week. I live in a country where most men drink something daily...and they also live A LOT longer on the average than the US population of men. Maybe it is related...maybe not. Just showing that it isn't killing the population or my size/strength gains.

It hinders recovery a bit. I try not to do it on lifting days. But im not competing or anything so Im not too hardcore about it. Its all about priorities.

Drinking Alcohol While Training??? I usually find I have really sloppy form, hit on any chick in the gym, and tend to puke alot faster.

On the plus side, I always look better in the mirrors.

I usually set my drink down under my bench.

I drink about once a week and get wrecked, but I am young and dont see the need to put my entire life into training and neglect my social life.

it does fuck my appetite for a few days but now that I cut it back to once as week as opposed to thur-sat it doesnt effect me much

UMMMMM, 1 drink will have adverse effects in some way?
a drink a day would provide beneficial heart protection.

There's no reason to use your 4th post to come down on somebody else. One drink can definitely have adverse effects, but at the same time a glass of red wine can help with your heart. A lot of it is relative to the type of drink. Sure some type of alcohol have some benefits, but I think as a whole, there are far more negatives than positives.

On a different note. Assuming you are going to have a drink every once in awhile when you go out with friends. What would you all reccommend? beer, wine, vodka, etc?

It won't have any beneficial effect on the liver, now will it?

Oh, and if you mean wine being good to drink, then you're better off eating dark colored berries. Lots of anti-oxidants there.

You know what else provides 'beneficial heart protection' (as if there was any sort of heart protection that was a hindrance  )? Management of cholestrol through:

-The consumption of oats, barley and rice bran. Soluble fiber will help cholestrol
-Fish, being subbed for meats, will lower cholestrol levels
-Olive, canola, peanut, corn and soy oils will help lower cholestrol levels
-Proper cardiovascular exercise preformed a few times weekly at a moderate intensity will help keep the heart healthy

So many other things. And you're trying to tell me a drink is good? Not even specifying what you mean by "drink"? So a shot of Jack will do me good? Fuckin' A! I never knew!

i thought it was good for you. shit i hve to stop drinking.

Ive done that a few times. Gotten drunk then went off to the gym. When I went to bench it was like the bar was skipping frames. It was all over the place. I smacked myself in the face a few times with various dumbells and bars. Definately a challenge. I had 6 beers when I was 18 and hit 6 parked cars before going to the gym. The first car was in my neighborhood in front of the owners, I was out of there! Then I set off someone's car alarm at a mcdonalds only to find out it was closed and drove my car through the hedges to make my getaway. Then I think I smashed someone's bumper off at the gym and took off. Cant remember the others. Fun times. Im not sure if I enjoyed that, or driving around after midnight with my various masks cutting people off the road and following them. Ill have to get back to you on that one.

Drinking AT the gym. Strange thing is...I've done it!! I had already finished training though.

What so many people miss out on is that having a social life with good food, good friends, and whatever else makes you happy in live (including a little drinking) will improve your lifting more than you might ever know.
