maybe it was a joke, but just in case... seems like it would be far too imprecise for such a situation. i'm no gun expert, but i thought that all shotguns only dispersed shot, and not single bullets.

A shotgun would not be the best weapon in that situation. At that range the man's head would literally explode, and the shrapnel (his skull) might very well hurt the baby. Looks like they handled it pretty well.
