The 225 Bench.....

I'm curious....please post your max bench and your max reps with 225.

Seems like high reps with 225 is some kinda of measure of strength. Don't they use that in the NFL Combine?

I'm at about 20 reps with a max of 325.

I really dont think that how many reps you can do with a given weight is a good indication of how much you can max. I've hit 385 raw, 440 with my shirt, and the most I've ever gotten with 225 for reps is 17 (that's raw.)

I managed to lose count on a set of five on the bench with whatever weight I was using last week so any hopes of a set of 20 will have to await a smarter me. Maybe it's something to do with lying down and gettng bored since I'll happily keep count of power shrugs to 20.

i went to the combine for college and they had 225 on. There was a guy there from SU when I went who benched it 28 times! i don't know his max bench and doubt it's over 450. i personally never do anything under 275 for reps.

It's more of an indication of your distribution of slow/fast twitch muscle fibers. If you have more slow twitch (endurance) fibers you might get 20 reps with 225 and only max 300. If you have more fast twitch fibers you might rep 225 20 times but have a max of near 400. Basically with slow twitch your strength falls off faster as you get higher in weight.

I did 11 with a pause (after 2 sets of 5's) . I don't think repping with 225 is much of an indicator of anything but its a nice finisher after you've done heavy work.

Max reps with 315 is more like it.

I think 225 is more of an endurance test as mentioned above and i have no clue as to why the hell the NFL even gives a shit about 225. Everyone entering the NFL should be able to handle 225 or there not ready for the NFL.

Most at 225...not sure...but have done 25 for a cool down set after going heavy. Max is 455 for 3, but not lately.

A bit off topic, but I remember watching the NFL draft several years back and (I think) Tampa Bay picked Keith McCants #1, a linebacker.

Well Mel Kiper on ESPN said that this was a questionable pick and - among other things - McCants only got 8 reps at 225 at the combine and 'there's DB's that can do that'

I remember reading somewhere that there was concern that some rookie linebackers were unable to squat 315. The commentators comment was "What? With which leg?". You'd expect a huge amount more power in any linebacker.

When I was tested for college ball, I did 16 reps w/ 225, and maxed out @ 365. I agree the 225 test seems kinda worthless for football. It's more of a strength endurance test, which would mean a lot more to athletes like boxers/wrestlers than football players, whatever the fuck theyre thinking.

Justin Geisinger, offensive lineman out of our school (Vanderbilt - Div. I SEC program) benched 225 43 times at the NFL combine this year

I'm in a different league than you guys. I can only put it up 4 - 5 times with a max of 260. One day I'll put it up 10 times.

im more in ur league too, all these strong guys damn

most i can do right now is 225 for 3

225x38 is my personal best at a bodyweight of 252. A week later I pulled a 315x15 set. Still couldn't get 405 after that though. I know I could have done it fresh, but I tried after the 315 set.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Your perseverance will pay dividends some day.

My goal for the year is to put up 225 for 3 sets of 6. I'm getting ready to start the 5x5 program this weekend. Hopefully that will add some strength and size to my frame.

It's funny, I got a 425 raw last nite but I still doubt I'd get more than 15 with 225, even fresh... I pause my benches, which makes rep work a lot harder.

I wonder if it's more about how switched on your CNS is vs your fiber types, I train with maximal weights all the time so I'm thinking every few weeks a couple of max sets with 225 might be a good idea.

that doesnt make sense, you cant get 55% of your max for 15 reps???

that doesnt seem right, i mean your fast twitch fibers wouldnt give out that quickly, youd should easily get 20 your first set. at least id hope so

1) Some people are just better at low reps than high ones or the reverse (long dry reasons)

2) One's training has a major impact on this. If you train high reps all the time, you'll get a lot better at high reps relative to your max. The inverse is also true. Stories of someone bombing a 600 squat and then doubling their rep capacity at 315 over a time and even more horribly bombing the 600 squat float around occasionally.

The best PLs/OLs have a combination of favorable leverages, good genetics for recruiting maximal force/power, and training programs designed spefically to improve these capacities.

I agree with madcow's #2.

I usually train in the 8-12 range since I'm older and more frail than most of you pups.

Don't want to pop a shoulder maxing out....

My goal is 25 with 225....I'm always guessing at my max though.

Thanks for the replies.
