The #1 culprit for the Civil War?

I suspect it was almost inevitable but still say that Buchanan was most responsible.

His complete lack of response when the South started seizing federal posts, during his term, in the south gave them a big green light for further aggressions.

Even Lincoln pretty well blamed Buchanan.

Someone told me that Lincoln privately wanted to ship the blacks back to Africa. I don't know about that but he certaqinly did hate slavery.

I am now a much larger fan of Lincolns after reading a lot more about the history. Had previously wondered if slavery could have been eased off from if the South had been given sufficient time to adapt.

The South would not have done this in my opinion.

I didn't realize Pat Buchanan was that old. :)

Lincoln actually had the idea of repatriating as many slaves as possible back to Africa as part of his concept for Reconstruction.

IMO, Without Slavery, the southern states main form of income(cotton/farming/plantation production) would have failed, and they would have nothing in the way of resources to survive... Hence why they were against giving it up..

Slavery was not the reason why the South suceeded(sp?). It was due to the fact that the gov't was becoming too big and wanted to control more of the Souths industries. Slavery was such a nonissue during the Civil War that you had slaves voluntarily fighting for the Confederacy. There is a really good book that my friend has recommended to me but I haven't read it yet. It's based on the story of black slaves fighting for the Confederacy. I'll call him and get the name for ya

Whoa....interesting idea but I personally think this is certified horse manure.

The slavery issue was THE dividing issue in American politics for decades. The issue determined preseidential elections, statehood, even the territories seized from Mexico and how the legal standing of those territories. Kansas, Texas, Utah, and California were all evaluated based on their impact on the slavery issue.

Slaves fighting for the Confederacy is no surprise. They were probably told they would get 70 virgins in heaven. Illiterate people(70% rate at the time) are easy to persuade.

The south survived without slavery after the war.

If slaves had been treated better, things would have been much different. For some reason, slaveholders in the north rarely felt a need to keep shackles and chains on their slaves. They were not really considered slaves if they were treated a lot better.

I have also read that as the Confed started needing more troops, they started
making promises to slaves that if they fought, they would win their feedom..

Much like today in Calif and elsewhere, the agriculture industry would likely collapse or costs would skyrocket if not for cheap migrant labor.

Exactly. Slaves were fighting because in many cases they were promised their freedom, not because slavery was a non-issue.

Lincoln had slaves.

And slept with some of them too.

I doubt this. Everybody who knew Lincoln knew that he hated slavery. It was his divining personality "characteristic."

He has never been affiliated with noteable promiscuity. He called off one marriage for a bit after falling for another woman as I recall but I forget the specifics.

Seriously bor.....why do gays have all this inside dirt on everyone. Gays say that ben Franklin etc. was gay.

What is your take on the way that Bush carressed the hand of the Saudi kingpin while taking their lil stroll? That just didn't like right and my gaydar rarely bleeps.
