Spain rail blasts: 173 dead
Thursday, March 11, 2004 Posted: 1300 GMT (2100 HKT)

MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- At least 173 people were killed and nearly 600 injured in a series of explosions on Madrid's railway network at the height of morning rush hour, Spain's interior minister says.

Spanish officials are blaming the Basque separatist group ETA for the coordinated attack, which comes ahead of Sunday's general election.

European Parliament President Pat Cox called the attack "the worst act of terror in the history of Spain and the worst act of terror in memory in any European Union state."

Spanish Interior Minister Angel Acebes said there were a total of 13 explosions at the Santa Eugenia, El Pozo and Atocha stations. He said there was "no doubt" ETA was responsible.

The most deadly blast happened on a train entering Madrid's main Atocha station, Acebes said.

Survivors described scenes of chaos and panic in the Spanish capital.

"The worst was people screaming for help inside the train and there was nothing we could do," one survivor told CNN+.

People in tears walked away from the city's main Atocha station in droves as rescue workers carried bodies away from the scene.

Many people with bloodied faces sat on curbs, using mobile phones to tell loved ones they were alive. (More eyewitness)

The attack comes ahead of Sunday's general election in which Spain's conservative ruling Popular Party -- which has taken a hard-line stance against ETA -- is currently leading in the polls.

So far, there has been no claim of responsibility.

ETA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, of which Spain is a member.

Before Thursday's attack, ETA had been blamed for 800 deaths since it began its fight for an independent homeland in Spain's northern Basque region.

Spain's ruling Popular Party announced it was suspending campaign rallies scheduled for later in the day and Friday.

Spanish police -- who have foiled several recent bombing attempts by ETA -- were on high alert for terror attacks by the separatist group ahead of Sunday's vote.

Video of the scene showed the wreckage of the train at Atocha, broken into pieces by the force of the explosions.

Spanish radio SER reported the train -- arriving from the eastern Madrid suburb of Alcala de Henares -- was hit by three explosions, planted in plastic bags in the front, middle and rear cars.

Survivors used mobile phones to tell relatives they were alive.
Medical staff set up a field hospital to treat the wounded at the scene, and buses were mobilized to help ambulances transport the wounded to hospitals.

Shortly after the blasts, Basque leader Juan Jose Ibarretxe held a news conference from the Basque capital of Vitoria, condemning the violence and calling for demonstrations against ETA.

Basque Member of Parliament Gustavo Aristegui -- who was in Madrid at the time of the attack -- also blamed ETA for the attack.

"This is probably Spain's worst terrorist attack in history -- not probably, surely our worst terrorist attack ever," Aristegui told CNN.

"There are people that are real monsters that are trying to blackmail the whole society through acts of terror."

Citizens queue up to donate blood in Madrid.
The attacks drew an immediate condemnation from British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who called it "a disgusting assault on the very principle of European democracy."

Spanish Foreign Minister Ana Palacio placed the blame squarely on ETA, saying "we knew they are preparing a very big terror attack."

"ETA has a very clear pattern in its activities and we unfortunately have a long experience in dealing with them," she said. (More reaction)

On February 29, Spanish police seized more than 1,000 pounds of explosives and arrested two suspected ETA members who were planning to carry out an imminent attack in Madrid, an official said.

CNN Madrid Bureau Chief Al Goodman contributed to this report.

Already posted it on the board Manny - tremendously sorry for those people and their families and in particular those maimed.

Excuse me? If that's a joke, it's not funny.

While I agree with that statement, the Basque group are not Muslims and I don't appreciate the previous inference. My wife is a Muslim as are many people I know and associate with and none of them are terrorists or agree with those few 'muslims' that carry out such bullshit.

It's comforting to know these people have a place reserved in Hell.

(the Terrorists, not the innocent)

If I had any karma points you would be on my red list as long as I'd visit here. Check your facts moron!

The way we will finally get through to the knuckleheads is via repetition.

All Muslims are not terrorists and all terrorists are not Muslims.

The Koran does not preach violence. Assholes who call themselves Muslims shit all over that religion by using it to incite violence in frustrated and angry people.

Exactly.

By the way ffactor, for your education, I offer you the tidbit of knowledge that the Basque group are Christians

My bad entirely, I will delete the post. "Basque" sounded kinda muslim like "Mosque" and for the record I have muslim family members too.

Lesson learned Mr. Ffactor ?

Sad..
Seems to be the latest way to get your cause into the worlds news spotlight..

It is NOT certain that it is the Basques that performed the attack , Spain supported Britain and the U.S. in Iraq , the only other E.U. country to do that. In fact the leader of the political wing of ETA has come out and said it was not them.

I doubt it's ETA. They usually go for govt./police/military targets. But at the same time, it happened 4 days before the general elections.

Well if it really is fundamentalist Arabs then that will REALLY throw the cat amongst the pigeons in Europe.

France should take this as a warning. They might be next.

"We bring the good news to Muslims of the world that the expected 'Winds of Black Death' strike against America is now in its final stage...90 percent (ready) and God willing near," the letter said.

hmmmmm.......

If more countries would adopt a policy, both home and abroad, more like the United States has, these clowns would be wiped out inside of a year. It's time for more countries to TRULY declare war on terrorism, and then act on it.

Sounds like something some white guy would write.

Real terrorists don't tell people "right about when" theyr'e going to strike and where. That seems pretty damn stupid. Why not just tell the location and time too while they're at it.

Do we KNOW that it was the Basques? Usually they (1) take credit for their attacks, and (2) give advance warning.

France is a funny place - they are very noble right up until the point when u shit on them , but they have more mercenaries than any other nation and are absolutely prepared to expend them on a whim. If this does turn out to be Arab fundamentalists then the entire West will be united , millions of dodgy "asylum seekers" in Europe are likely to be forcibly repatriated.....crusades here we come!

this in itself is probably enough to polarise the UK even more so to anti terror, and maybe some of its neighbours

i dont know about france...but if another euro country gets hit or america again (as the letter alludes to) then the shit will REALLY hit the fan...

Honestly, if there were more attacks in the US, I doubt much would happen right away, if at all. The Air Force would bomb some new country and the congress would pass some new laws, but security wouldn't improve much...just like it didn't improve much after 9/11. US Foreign and domestic policy would stay pretty much the same.

Isralies, for example, understand you can't just stick your head in the sand when you're under terrorist threat. Americans will eventually understand that as well, and hopefully not many more people need to die for that to happen.

but i'm positive that domestic surveillance of citizens would increase (ID cards, CCTV, email/phone surveillance)...and vigilante attacks against muslims, after 9-11 people were randomly killing over here, as it gave them a good 'excuse'

as for bombing someone...maybe, but i douubt they could find them. what im constantly suprised about is the resounding silence from the muslim community about this attack...they should be being publicly denounced, not only in the western media but in the arab media, and crucially they are not. there is merely a condemnation by a few major mainstream organisations and thats it

They are gonna get a one way ticket home or some swimming lessons if this is Al-Qaeda. Europe has been way too accomodating of these economic migrants on our welfare for too long. At least the US does something right.

Seems like I was right, apology retracted.

Then I guess you are an idiot. Your comment wasn't only wrong because you identified the people responsible as being muslim. Your comment was wrong because it categorized all muslims as being terrorists and that all muslims should be shot and killed. Considering that you then admitted having muslim family members, I'll assume you think they're terrorists too.

That’s not like saying Muslims are terrorists is it?

I'm not even sure what that means but if you are inferring that I stated all Christians are terrorists, please show me where I said that. I don't make generalizations, do I look like ffactor or curling?

If they were I'd turn them over to the FBI in a heartbeat.

Actually no, not ALL muslims by any means. However, I would say 80-90% of the Muslims in the following countries:
Saudia Arabia
Syria
Libya
and 50-60% of Pakistan.
Saudi Arabia should be destroyed immediately.

agreed....Britain is a breeding ground for extremism and its because most of the extremists are coming over direct from places like pakistan and then bullying others towards fundementalism

I know so many muslims, and even though only a minority are hardcore, i know most of them will not speak up against the bad apples...the fact this doesnt happen enough means we are slowly moving towards something like this. we have been too lax on immigration to economic migrants IMO...people who say its not a problem don;t see the wider picture...it doesnt need to stop but it does need tighter regulations

i was thinking similar things....i had thought an infective agent due to the 'black death' but a dirty bomb would be more effective

if it were that....just the fact radiation was used as a weapon would spark up real trouble

Ok, I'll bite. What is your criteria for the selection process? Who's going to make the determination? How are you going to avoid destroying some percentage of the one's that "shouldn't" be destroyed but end up falling in the witch hunt? Oh, and are you Austrian?

Do you think that is important? What he writes on here may not even remotely represent what he actually believes. It may be, or it may be a reflection of things he/she hears or sees around them. There are plenty of people who do believe what he's saying, unfortunately.

Sorry but I really think that Saudi Arabia is funding the spread of militant fundamentalism around the world. I also think that money to support terrorism is coming from Saudi Arabia and perhaps Syria. Extremists in Pakistan are spreading nuclear technology to rogue Islamic countries for one purpose only, to give them destructive power. The muslim religion by itself is very rigid and dictatorial, i.e., you can't go to heaven by believing in god, you have to dress a certain way, act a certain way, pray so many times a day, keep fast etc, etc, etc. If you don't then you will go to hell. The religion and their way of life does not allow progress, innovation or forward thinking. They keep going backwards in time and if given the opportunity will take verybody else with them. Sorry if my words seem harsh. Like I said, I have family that practice Islam.

Americans should be made to read the Koran as an educational assignment.

What you will find will shock you. And even further shock you when you realize people base their lives and existence upon this book.

I'm still amazed people base their lives and existence off the bible.

Dude, you've always seemed like a reasonable guy and some of the assertions you're making here such as some Saudi's funding Islamic extremism are perfectly valid. That doesn't mean you blow the whole country off the map.

The description you have offered of Islam is somewhat correct although I think you meant to say 'you go to heaven by believing in God'. However, this is an old and outdated interpretation of the Quran. There are many progressive and forward thinking muslim scholars out there that don't think like the old school. If they are 'backward' to you, who cares? I believe an American ideal is freedom of speech and expression. I am not a religious person although my wife is muslim and don't really wish to get into a philosophical debate over religions but condemning an entire religion and its practicioners is wrong and surely you can see that. I believe you have some Indian heritage, you wouldn't appreciate it if someone blindly generalized all Indians would you?

Are you kidding, I generalize Indians all the time. Read some of my posts. If I can't make fun of people in a similar ethnic group as myself, how can be objective about others.
