I think that if a person is competent enough to decided whether or not they want to live the rest of their life suffering...then they should be able to. I work in an ER and I have heard SO many older folks with terminally ill diseases say..."I am just so ready to leave this world because I just don't want to suffer like this any longer."
Yes, it is sad for the families...and a lot of people would look at it as being a suicide...but think about it. If they are 80 or so years old...and they feel like they have lived their life to the fullest...and don't want to suffer...let them go. They will be happier where they are going anyway.
This is an extremely controversial subject in the medical industry today....and I don't ever think it is going to be solved...because there are always a lot of people who agree with both sides.
