Did my first consult with a hair doc today. I have no family history or personal history with MPB (and I'm 37). Never been a shedder, always had a whack-o thick head of hair.
This guy begins explaining something to me abou "telogen effluvium". Apparently mass-shedding occurs when hormone levels fluctuate and is common for people starting HRT. This condition comes from mass numbers of hairs being forced into the telogen phase.
This is different, in that while shedding also occurs in MPB, it also entails the miniturization of the follicle over time. Telogen effluvium can also occur at the onset of a new wave of MPG progression... so the two can be linked.
Can others build on this information? How can you definitively determine whether it's telogen effluvium or accelerated MPB? I'm working this doc hard, but you guys are the ones who live this stuff every day -- the doc just treats it.
Thanks,
