No I mean they got everything back when you include the 600. One of my friends is from Alaska and he got everything back (individual + earned income) and the Alaska refund so he his wife and their baby actually got paid 1400 dollars this year for being US/Alaska citizens.

they are truly the exception to the rule! :artist:

I paid a shitload in taxes, ill get a little back but not enough to call it a draw.

been eyeing a shed for my lawn equipment and motorcycle, the rest goes to bills and food.

Well considering the military has over a million employees I would disagree. See the deal is we don't make enough money to pay taxes in the first place. I would say on average the US military person pays less than 1000 dollars taxes each year, I know in 12 years I've payed almost nothing.

I'm military and I get back just over $5000 a year. Next year it will be more since I had another kid. When you look at base pay we technically live below the poverty level.

I was part of a committee that pushed for zero taxes for military households...both h & w, but it got nowhere--

This is one thing that makes me laugh. You work for the government and then pay taxes, aren't you just paying a portion of your own salary at that point?

The thing is it takes more people to do it this way so the other tax payers have to pay for those jobs also(the jobs that handle paperwork concerning gov employees getting paid, paying taxes, getting returns). Thus it is basically a primitive system costing citizens money. However if you asked the people if government employees should have to pay taxes most people would scream hell yes out of principal.(those are the dumb people costing themselves money btw)

props to you for trying to do it the smart way.

You're painting a totally false picture there. Just like any other worker, that depends on a lot of factors: How long have you been working? Are you married? (personal choice). Do you have kids? (personal choice). Spending habits (personal choice).

One thing I know you have if you are active duty military that many don't have: comprehensive health care for you and your family, a solid life-insurance plan, tax-free housing allowance, tax-free food allowance, free tuition for college courses and an opportunity to draw a pension beginning the day after you serve 20 years.

IF you are not wounded, maimed or murdered in yet another useless foreign war started by a two-faced, corrupt politician/dishonorable commander-in-chief out to make his big bucks corporation backer even wealthier at the epense of your backside...

That is a crying shame! What an excellent Bill that would have been for our men & women in uniform. The only tax exempt I ever received was my time in Desert Storm. 8 months of no taxes & hazard duty pay.
I understand the troops paying social security, but Federal Income Tax.....dumb!

Lol that's why I said "if you look at base pay". We are only taxed on our base pay which is why on paper it looks like we live below the poverty level, and therefore get so much back. Married people with kids obviously get more but the single guys get it all back as well.

i just can't believe the current temporary occupant of the white house/the most dishonorable commander-in-chief EVER didn't throw his full moral support behind this bill..

our argument was that (1) while they try and sell you on the fact that with all your housing and benefits its close to the private sector, that is just not the case--and i heard about base housing.......(2) for the reservists called up for a year at a clip the financial hardship is too much (one less caregiver in the house etc); and (3) the actual revenue the government gets from military families it not that much, but the benefit the families would get by not having that burden could help offset some of the hardships. there was even a clause the would phase out the benefit as you got the top levels (e.g. above major unless in combat or reservist/guard called to active).

Phasing it out in the top ranks is an excellent idea as those are the folks who need it less. You mentioned the hardship created by some tours..I agree. There are a ton of short tour remotes (Korea comes to mind) that are no picnic. Not to mention some of those are extended up to 18 months. Thats a LONG time to be away from your family (if you made that "choice"). Like you said, the income from military personnel is minimal in the big picture, giving them that break would be HUGE.

Oh yea, so we don't get too far off topic, May 9th will be a wonderful day for me

it wasn't hurricane Katrina that flooded most of new orleans. the flooding was caused by the Faulty Levies built an maintained by a federal agency, the unites states corps of engineers.

i blame President Bush for his slow, uneven and miserly response to the misery and destruction caused by the Faulty Levies.
