I came across this old article, anyone know if dan ever responded to it? I couldn't find a response from dan on the site. So, what is the current opinion of usnic acid in regards to saftey?

I never heard either if Dan ever responded to the article, although he probably talked to others about it in a joking manner. As far as him being the devil, that's just hilariously absurd.

My opinion is that usnic acid is not anywhere near as horrible as that article so glaringly states. I'd much rather see an article outlining the dangers of using margarine rather than usnic acid.

There seems to be discrepancy in the scientific terminology usage in that article and what is in the cited literature. This article seems to use the term "uncoupling" as though it were a phenom unique to usnic acid. In reality, it is not. It is rather surprising how many other substances are mitochondrial uncouplers. Also, you can't really compare how usnic acid affects pathologic dermal lesions and relate this similarly to oral intake, given the broad cell phase distinctions between neoplasms of almost any nature and normal tissue. Whether or not this translates into real world side effects is unclear. However, the mitoclastic and spindle effects, if they are as reported, probably would have manifested sooner rather than later.

But then again, I'm not an oncologist.

Dan Duchaine was the greatest diet/steriod/supplement guru ever to walk the planet.

Thanks for everything Dan

Dan was the greatest showman and personality and one of the best writers of scientific stuff for lay people. He was not the greatest mind by any stretch of the imagination as 95% of his ideas came from others and he lacked the scientific understanding to really contemplate most things beyond a very fundamental level.

I'm sorry if this offends you, but I knew Dan very well and this is how it was.

With that said, I do owe Dan alot and I would probably never be where I am now without him. He could be your worst enemy and your best friend. RIP

Dan Duchaine reminds me of Freud. His theories have been shown to be untrue in many ways after his death.

That doesn't offend me at all Pat. I got into training and supplements from his articles. I followed his advice from his book and really grew fast. I am sure that you are beyond his level no doubt but to many unscientfic people like me I think he really helped out.

He sure gets the credit for a lot of stuff. I was under the impression from others that he was more of an innovator than a showman. Is his recognition of the usefulness of whey, ephedra, usnic acid (among others) part of the 95%? Even if they are the ideas of others they are rather genius and the weightlifting world has benefitted tremendously just the same, I would think. I didn't know him, but I would hate to think he got famous for what he didn't know.

I also heard he invented the recumbent bike.

Like his idea of introducing whey protein to the market?
No, not like that.

I'm not saying his ideas and the ideas he supported were all wrong or worthless. He definitely sparked some thought, good or bad, and I still enjoy reading his articles.
