suppressors for a SIG

In the USA it falls under the same general licensing that you'd need to own a machine gun.

If you're in a backwater where popping rats with a .22 is considered light entertainment and the county sheriff was on the football team with you, maybe still chugs the occasional cold one at your backyard bobby-cue, it's quite possible.

Anyplace else? Fuggedaboudit.

Suppressor - flash suppressor?

Suppressor - silencer?

If it's silencer, I thought you could own them if you paid the tax stamp on them. Honestly I can't remember at the moment.

yeah bor, you'd be in some deep shit if you got caught with silencer on your gun

some states have carry large fines and penalties for that

"Tax stamp" = Class III permit. Goes all the way back to the gangster wars in the 30s; while they were getting Tommy guns off the streets they also threw in silencers and a whole range of what they called "destructive devices" -- which includes sawed-offs and grenades.

And it's a Federal rap, not (just) a state one. Double-plus-ungood.

Right, so with a Class III permit, you can, correct?

I have no idea what you people are talking about (I know, guns). Does this mean I am a pussy or you guys are hicks?

And wtf do you need a silencer for, tough guy?

Class III licenses are not easy to come by. If you manage to get one you are now licensed to own fully automatic guns and to put silencers on them. Fun stuff...useless...but fun.

Yeah, but aren't automatic weapons limited to nothing made after 1983 or something stupid like that?

You can own a silencer and a machine gun if you get the right permit to do so. They are both considered Title 2 weapons.
You can only buy them from a licensed Class 3 Dealer.
You also have to apply for a permit from the BATF and pass an FBI background check. Some States will not allow you to own one though.

Here is a breakdown for you:
Generally, you must meet the following FEDERAL requirements to own a Title II NFA weapon:

Be a US Citizen at least 21 years of age Be of a sound mind Not a person prohibited from receiving a Title I firearm Never convicted of a felony Pay a one-time Federal Transfer Tax on each weapon purchased ( $200.00 for machine guns, suppressors, $5 for AOWs) Complete BATF Form 4 in duplicate, which includes: (1) Obtaining the signature of the "Chief Law Enforcement Officer" (CLEO) in your area signifying that he has no knowledge that you will use your weapon for anything other than lawful purposes, and provide a reason for the "reasonable necessity" to possess the weapon described (2) Provide two (2) sets of fingerprints (3) Provide two 2"x2" recent photographs NOTE: Items 1 through 3 above are not required for corporate ownership of NFA weapons, reducing approval time significantly.

If you have your own corporation or are an officer in a corporation, the corporation can acquire these weapons and you, as a corporate officer, may be able to possess the item(s), take them to the range shooting, etc. just as if they were registered to you, provided you are acting within the confines of the corporation.

It should be noted that in states where it is ILLEGAL for an individual to own, carry, transport, or be in possession of a machinegun or any other NFA weapon, corporate ownership is NOT a viable option (e.g., South Carolina). If the corporation dissolves, the item must be transferred to another individual, corporation, or dealer. If in doubt, check with your local Class III dealer.

After approximately 90 days, during which time the FBI performs a criminal background check, you will receive your Form 4 from BATF. Only after the transfer is approved can you take possession of your item.

Machineguns are ILLEGAL for individuals in DE, DC, HI, NY, WA, SC

Class 3 dealers are allowed possession in CA, IL, IO, KS, MI, NJ, RI, SC

Silencers are ILLEGAL for individuals in DE, DC, HI, IL, MS, MT, NY, NJ, RI

Class 3 dealers are allowed possession in : CA, KS, MO, MN

Silencers are great if you spend a lot of time shooting or are in an area where noise is a factor.

The Firearm Owner's Protection act in 1986 prohibits civlian ownership of any newly manufactured automatic weapon.

You can buy weapons manufactured before that date, however they are very expensive.
You can buy most anything you want legally if you have enough cash.
Even M203 grenade launchers, they are chambered for, I think, a 37mm instead of 40mm.

1983, 1986....I was close ;)

The M203 sucks. We fired them and aiming it is a bitch and a half. Gimme a MK-19 anyday. That thing is fun as hell to shoot. Nothing like hitting disabled vehicles 1500-2000 yards away and lighting them up :D

Only downside to the MK-19 is the size. Kinda hard to just tote one around. Damn tripod weighs about as much as the MK-19 itself.

this is a cool thread.

I don't know shit about guns, I grew up shooting and had a few of my own that I left with my parents, but I don't know shit about it really. (I know how to shoot, and gun safety, etc).

Cool to see digger chiming in partcipating. That's some interesting info. Much cooler then just popping in to scold someone.

Mountain muscle.. damn you know your shit :)

I know more about shooting than I do about specific guns. People tell me "oh, I have this" and I just go...ok, that's nice...what is it?

Did a walking fire with the handgun from 25 yards down to about 10 the last time I was at the range. 18 shots, just pulling the trigger while walking, stopped to drop mags and throw a new one in. Found 12 in the black and I really don't trust the accuracy of my handgun much beyond 15 yards.

Other guys on the pistol line were looking at me like I was crazy, but hey, I like to have fun when I can :)

25 yards with a handun is a different story eh Crak?
I shot some this weekend offhand at 8" targets at 25 yards and it made feel like a noob. I have a 4" barrel on mine what is your Mak?
