They're called "419" from the section of the Nigerian penal code they violate. Google for that or "mugu guyman" and you'll find all sorts of pages where people have gotten the senders to dress up and wear signs in front of a webcam. "Hold up a sign with my name on it. Hugh G. Rection." Ha ha.

They're the spammer's answer to spam filters that require "human intelligence." You know those things where you have to type a fuzzy six-digit number to sign up for free email now? The spammers hire poor Nigerians and give them a penny every time they sign up for ten accounts or whatever.

Nasty stuff -- people have been stupid enough to send their life savings to these crooks (another name for the scheme is "advance fee fraud" because if you bite they try to get you to "advance" them some money to grease the wheels). Some of the victims even flew to Africa to try to collect -- and didn't make it back alive.

One guy killed a Nigerian consulate official over this scam (instead of shooting himself for being so frigging stupid). Not so funny after all.

A guy in my office had his bank accounts drained by a nigerian scam. The bank received a transfer order from him that upon investigation was a forgery. He discovered his accounts were empty when he went to pay his rent. It took months for the bank to admit their mistake and reimburse him (plus interest).
