STRETCHING.... just cuious

I'm not really looking for advice on stretching as I bend the shit out of my muscles hard and long post workout. Depending on the exercises I will even do so during. I know Arnold was huge on this.

Just curious if you big bastards out there include stretching in your regimen and if you've seen any benefits from it? I am pretty damn flexible myself period and think its even more impressive for my size since I know I'm more agile than allot of my friends.

Also, I believe it helps with post workout related soreness too. Not saying it aids in recovery but I do believe I tend not to get knotted up as much and what not.

State your thoughts here guys...

I stretch EVERY muscle twice a day first thing in the morning and before bed holding it for about 30 seconds def helps with recovery :)

personally, I like to apply an extreme (weighted when possible), 60 second minimum, static stretch to the muscle right after working it when the muscle is warm. I do find this helps tremendously with my recovery.

i used to go get a deep tissue masage once per wk. i walked out of there bruized ans battered. no doubt that it worked. now i just have my wife dig her heals into me one muscle group per day before we go to bed. i also use the methods ceo stated on each muscle group right after i work them.

Some of the latest studies is actually showing that static stretching weakens the muscles. I'm not sure what to think of that yet, but I'm going to look into it.

REALLY, wow, that is interesting although I don't believe that but who knows. I stretch ther shit out of my muscles post workout as, especially the ones that I just previously taxed. I like to stretch minorly between sets periodically too. I just like how it loosens the muscle up. Especially legs!

better go back and read your studies. Performed on a COLD muscle, that is true.

stretching is good stuff. definitely helps with recovery for me with little to no stiffness the next day. PLUS it feels nice to stretch after a set:p

i started to use the FST-7 principles, i use the FST-7 program for a month or so, then switch to a powerlifting program with great results

I've read some of those studies, I know what you're talking about. If my memory is correct, static stretching right before doing a power-related exercise inhibits power output, strength*speed. I believe one study used the vertical jump as a test of power. It showed that power output WAS inhibited a bit when the subjects did static stretching. But this was TEMPORARY. That temporary part is a big thing most articles failed to mention. I believe they also tested dynamic/ballistic stretching before a workout which resulted in being temporarily stronger.

IMO there are definitely some static stretches you want to do before working out such as, hip flexor stretches, external hip rotator stretches, levator scapulae stretches...to name some.

it basically shuts off the stretch reflex of the joints involved in the lift. look at the bench press and the shoulder girdle. stretch prior to benching, you take the girdle of the shoulder and loosen it so there is no "bounce" as the weight hits the bottom of the movement. could lead to alot of injuries.

Looks like I opened up a can of worms, I love it. Don't have time to read that article right now but will do so later tonight or even better at work tomorrow :) Keep it coming guys, learning allot more than I anticipated!

from the study:

"For many competitive athletes warming up completely prior to competition and stretching after competition or training may be more important. By stretching afterwards the athlete gains flexibility without compromising power and strength. "

So pretty much what I said in an earlier post. Don't perform static stretches on a cold muscle (ie. before the exercise is performed) or it will cause a decrease in strength.

Instead perform the static stretches after exercise whent the muscle is warm. This, in my experience helps with recovery (and decreases DOMS) and increases flexibility.

Yeah, pretty much. Also, a cold muscle being stretched is more prone to being overstretched and injured since they aren't as flexible as warm ones.

Same goes for dynamic stretching before the primary exercise. You'd be stretching a cold muscle if you didn't do some kind of warmup first which could result in injury. It is best to do a little warm up then dynamic/ballistic stretching, then the primary exercise, then static stretching.

This is the only way I do it and was under the impression that its the ONLY way it was suppose to be done.
