Straight Answer (cardio+weights)

Ok when wanting to slap on a 30min cardio jaunter to the end of a weight-lifting workout what are the pro's and cons of slamming say 30g-protien/30g-simple sugars right after lifting before cardio? Am i just going to burn off that sugar while i do my cardio?

Also please answer for those using gear and those not.

Thanks.

Yes? Yes i'll just burn off the sugar? Is it good to do this though? Will I throw some nutrients and protein into my muscles and switch the anabolics process on? I just blasted back and bis, slammed a onescoop protein (30g) with water shake and had an apple. Now i'm going to wait an hour then do cardio.

Usually I like the cardio on an empty tank first thing am, great results this way!

First off, I am not a fan of a cardio session following a weight session unless you have "plenty of fat to spare" so to speak.

I would question the motive of doing this, you work so hard to tear down a muscle in your workout to build muscle, then turn around and do something generally considered for fat burning and/or endurance.

You need to define your goals. If fat burning is your main goal, then it would probably make little sense to throw in some hi glycemic carbs, as this will raise insulin, which of course is the antagonist to glucagon which you worked so hard to acheive.

The protein would not be a bad idea, as fat burning requires amino acids, and without adequate AA's in the system, you would become even more catabolic as the body will have to go to muscle tissue to get them.

By the way, an apple is not so hi glycemic a carb. Though it does contain a decent amount of sugars, it also contains fiber, which delays digestion of the sugars, thus slowly releasing the sugars and little if any rise in blood sugars.

When you are lifting weights, you are using up the glucose molecules your body has stored from the carbs taken in that day.(If this is the case, otherwise it will go through glycolisis and use the glycogen stores from the muscles). Anyway, point is that if you have the proper nutrinion , while lifting weights you will use carb energy for that, and if you add in a cardio session, your body will then go into your fat stores for energy b.c you used the carbs while lifting. Am I making sense? Just trying to simplify it without getting all chemical about it ;)

For me, doing cardio after lifting aides in fat burning...and I got tons of fat on this booty!!!!! I also do an am emty stomach cardio session.....great fat burning this way!!! So I guess its all about preferences, what works for you as an individual, and what your goal is!!!!! Good luck !!

Only if you want your weight routine to suck and be a waste of time.

Pretty much true. You will be depleting needed glycogen. Your strength will suffer. Weights should always take precedence over the calorie burn from cardio.

I suggest doing them on different days, or at least with 6-8 hr. separation.

Resistance training should always take priority over cardio. Here's why....

The long term gains of increased LBM (lean body mass) and increased secretion of hormones like GH and test far outweigh the calories burnt during a cardio session..

By doing cardio before weights you are simply reducing the amount of glycogen available that could have been used more effectively to fuel your muscles throughout the weight training session...This point cannot be stressed enough.

Perhaps all us FATASSES just should know when to put down the fork LOL... but i totally agree about lfiting over cardio. I think am empty tank is the only way to go for fat loss cardio, perhaps though a 15min warm-up pre weights will kick your body into a heart rate to burn some more cals.

yea i never ran before weights it would waste my energy.

Also, DIET is key. i lost 80lbs with only about 1 month in a gym (bought the yr memebership and fucking gym got closed)

had 8pac and all from dieting. So if ur running to loose some fat, make sure your diet is key and then cardio on empty stomach.

OK, I'll write this in ALL caps so that the the idea is not lost.

DON'T EAT CARBS BEFORE CARDIO

specially high-GI carbs, like dextrose and whatnot.

I assume you are doing cardio for fat loss and not for endurance (which is a different story altogether)

Let me clarify what I wrote, I do "lite" weights after cardio, right now my schedule is lifting free weights 3 days, jogging 3 days, 1 day off. On those jogging days, after I finish I usually go lifting in the machine weight room (stuff like butterfly, lateral raise), on my main lifting days I use freeweights only and do stuff like deadlifts, military bench press, etc). I guess I basically shouldn't fool with those machine weights after I do cardio, its just I feel much better after I do it.
