"Stitch" in the side from cardio?

About a month ago I started doing alot of cardio in hope to help lean up this spring. Im slowly trying to build up my lungs to where I can run for a longer period of time. As of now I can only run about 4 minutes before Im about completely winded and have to walk a couple minutes to fully catch my breath. Every so often have gotten a "stitch" in my side but nothing too bad. But the last few times I have gone to the gym I get a "stitch" in my side worse and lasting longer than before and after only a couple of minutes of running. Im doing nothing different at all. Anyone know what causes this and how it can be avoided? Is it at all asthma related?? I always stretch good and walk at a decent pace for like 5 minutes before I even start to speed up to running. Any info will be appreciated.

Just curious if it could possibly be asthma related at all? When I was younger more so than now I used to get these real sharp pain in the lung to where I would just have to double over and breath really shallow till it went away (1-2 minutes prob). I wouldnt even be running or doing anything strenuous, possibly just sitting there and this would happen. These weren't frequent and the rest of the time I never had any trouble with breathing.

Side stitches are believed to be caused by the stretching of the ligaments that extend from the diaphragm to the internal organs, particularly the liver. The jarring motion of running while breathing in and out stretches these ligaments.

To prevent side stitches, try EXHALE when your LEFT foot hits the ground. The liver is located on the right hand side of the body just below the rib-cage, so exhaling when your right foot hits the ground causes greater forces on the liver.

Also, stretching properly, not eating so soon before you run, breathing deeply while you run, increasing your core strength and improving your overall fitness will help.

yep i agree with the breathing.... when i fun i kinda count.. 2 steps out 2 step in
keeps the breaths just right..... plus plenty of water and electrolites..
well you dont want a full stomache right before you lift.. but.. are you running every day???
