I have a 2005 Alienware lamptop that beats the snot out of your average modern laptop, however, price for it back in the day was outrageous, but it keeps up well with the trends... if I but another pc or device, I select it making sure it is upgradeable and will stay ahead, OR I'll pay less and buy the old version and shall not complain about all the features it lacks
The average modern laptop has an i3 or i5 processor in them. There was nothing on the top end of laptops in 2005 that can even come close to trying to even compare or compete with even Intels low to mid range processors. The graphics chips alone built into the sandy bridge processor series are better than almost every discrete card there was at that time.

Interesting analysis, Apple has a mere 10.7% share of the PC market; They do lead in "novelty devices" but when it comes to the foundation of business and academic productivity they have the same market share they did when I was taking undergrad Spanish in a PC lab circa 1992.
On a side note; I found it ironic the Wall Street occupiers that are protesting corporate greed stopped to venerate Steve Jobs. Apple has a higher profit margin than banks and oil companies, both of which are essential for the functioning of a modern society unlike Apple. If apple ceased to exist tomorrow society would continue to function...make banks and/or oil companies disappear and society would quickly collapse. Likewise, Apple has outsourced thousands of jobs oversees to produce the consumer products the occupiers worship.
