STD campaign asks lovers to give out meds

That's a great idea.

As long as I don't have to pay for it.

you didn't hear?

Obama is sending the bill straight to you.

We joke about it, but these guys are great at turning a sound idea into a right into a taxpayer cost.

STD meds should be OTC anyway.

Agree on both counts....

I skimmed the article, didn't see anything specific about this applying to govt. aid programs although one can assume that obamacare sort of covers anything broadly relating to health care.

I'm not sure this will come out of taxpayer dollars beyond that broad reference, so it's still a good plan. If the idea is prevention of repeat infection, it could save money long term and it could hypothetically help the level of care needed for STDs by lowering the spread by people who don't have insurance or won't go see a doctor. Less people seeing the doctor under obamacare - less tax dollars getting spent.

(unless I skipped over a part that negates all that, which is possible)

That's one of the many problems caused by Obamacare. A sound idea, like letting doctors script STD medication for their partners, opens the door to a whole new round of cost, fraud and abuse. I'd rather make the drugs OTC and available anywhere (at a low cost) and have people pay for them out of their own pockets.

I'd agree with that. I just don't see much room for abuse of antibiotics and antivirals. A scrip written for someone outside the healthcare system is still going to get paid for out of pocket.

cosign in principle but OTC antibiotics are a horrible idea IMO

The line is always blurry and challenging. For example, I would see alot of people didn't want to pay for the Afghan encounter, but they do. I can see that alot of people don't want to pay for this or that, but they do.

On some level, I don't see the team deciding to piss off one group completely and try to compromise (and piss off everyone).

I completely agree with the concept of limiting OTC antibiotic use. The problem is, you've got billions of people in India and China who will out-abuse us on a regular basis. One of the most popular medicines in China are placebos -- because good doctors give medicine.

But again, I do agree that we shouldn't be putting antibiotics in everything. Hopefully the higher-end ones will remain so proprietary and expensive that they can't be abused. Who would have thought that sheer profiteering of pharmaceuticals may save humanity?
