"Staggered" Foot Positioning on the Press

PoweredUp

Banned
I was watching a guy push press 225 pounds at the gym tonight, and I noticed that the positioning of his feet were different than I had seen. Rather than using the standard shoulder-width stance with his feet parallel to one another, he used more of a staggered stance where one foot was placed in front of the other (kind of as if you took a freeze frame of someone walking). I asked him about it and he said that standing that way gave him better balance. I asked if it took away from his power and he said that he didn't feel like it did.

Have any of you ever pressed this way before? Is this a common stance for this exercise? Do any of you see any potential negatives by taking this stance?

i've seen mention of something similar in this article:

The very first drawing where it shows the "splot" stance is pretty similar to what he was doing. The only difference is that his legs weren't spread nearly as wide as is shown in that drawing, but the description they gave is pretty much right on. One leg forward, one leg in the rear, and an overall "scissor-like" stance.

I tried pressing from that stance and I do feel like my balance would be better. I'm just wondering f there is some potential for danger that I'm not seeing. There has to be some reason that almost 100% of people use the standard shoulder-width stance when pressing.
