St. Louis Pro-Am Contest :)

b fold the truth

Elite Strongman
Platinum
I sure did have a good time this past weekend. I made a few mistakes but I also made A LOT of big impressions.

Log Press: 1 RM, 20 pound jumps, 3 attempts.
I hadn't missed 300 with MY log in about 2 years...so I decided I'd open with 300. When I came out of the hole on the clean I felt my hamstring pop and I never could get my leg back underneath me. I did it for 2 complete reps but couldn't stand still and in place long enough to get the down signal from Magnus. Came back out and attempted 320 (next weight I was allowed to attempt) and did the same thing. Passed on 340. This placed me last...22nd.

Here you can see me with my opener. Elbows and knees locked, head through...but if you look closely at my left foot...I couldn't get my toes to lay flat on the floor. EASY clean and VERY easy press though.

Next event was the Super Yoke. Myself, Eric Todd, and Mike Wortham had all missed our openers so we went first on the Super Yoke. HAD to have a good time here. It felt STRANGE...balance was much different than any other yoke I'd ever used. NOBODY set a PR time on it this weekend. They said that it was 840...it WAS.
I think my time was 16.13 seconds and the ENTIRE Yoke had to cross the line...so about 85+'. This placed me 3rd out of all the Pro's. Chad Smith and Ron Slusarski beat me on this event. I turned some heads, and limped a bit when I was done.

Next were the stones. 265, 300, 335, 360, 380 to 54" platforms. I did take my time on these but they said that they looked so easy that I was actually shooting them off of my chest and they were landing in the platform so hard that it nearly turned over the platform when they landed. I flew through the first 4 then rested about 10 seconds, then did the 380 stone too. HUGE PR!!! Remember that I could not even break the 380 off the ground at Boston a couple months ago. This placed me 6th in this event I believe.

They decided that the Hercules Hold was not heavy enough...so they added weights to it. Someone said that it felt like 350 or so before they added more weight to each hand. The set up would pull me left and right every couple of seconds and it was actually more odd than heavy. I got 36 or better seconds and the winning time was around 49 by Phister.

I finished day 1 in 12th place out of 22 and was pretty happy considering I placed 22nd on the first event.

Give me a bit to post more pics...

Warming up for Day II was NOT fun...lol. Both days were to start at 9:00 in the morning so I was there at the contest before 8:30 both days. After a full body intense workout on Saturday...you don't want to do it all over again on Sunday...lol.

I didn't take a warm-up on the Viking Press because I saw some impressive pressers struggle to get a single with it on the warm-up. I just knew that I had to get ONE rep so I didn't take last. I saw a few Pro's not get a single with it...so I HAD to.

The weight was 332 in the hands and it felt STRANGE!!! I grinded out 2 reps and walked away with a smile:)

Next event was the Squat. It FELT like 650 straight out of the hole...and it was DEEP. I think I was probably 3-4" past competition depth. I was getting ready for the event and the best so far after about 20 competitors was a single with it. I remember yelling at the spotters NOT to let me quit...and it became a blur from there. I got 8 reps, then they caught me and I walked over and the cameras from Fox Sports were in my face. I quickly took down my straps on my suit and talked to them for a few minutes...:)

It truly was one of the toughest and coolest events that I've ever done. Wish I had one:) Not sure where I placed...but I know that I did beat quite a few pro's (even several who beat me in the squat at Boston a couple months ago).

Clint%20squat%2002.jpg

You can see HERE that I'm pretty deep...yet I'm already about 3-4" on my way UP from the bottom...lol
Clint%20squat%2004.jpg

Clint%20squat%2007.jpg

Next was the Conan's Wheel and they said it was HEAVY. They were wrong. It was TOOOOO LIGHT!!!! They used a customized Harley with a 100 lb plate added. I went 199' and made a decent showing in this event. I know that I did beat quite a few competitors.

Clint%20wheel%2001.jpg

Clint%20wheel%2004.jpg

The last event...and dreaded one for me...lol. The MEDLEY. 300 farmers, 800+ tire, 800 sled drag...all for 50' on a VERY slick floor. Farmers were easy and fast, kept slipping on the tire because the floor was slick concrete and covered in chalk, and could not get traction on the sled drag. Nearly finished though.

They gave us a 2 minute time limit. You know what? 2 minutes on a medley is a LONG time...lol. As soon as time ran out, I turned around and Mike Wortham and Kasey caught me, took me through the gate, got my shirt off, got me near a trash can and on the ground, then put ice on me. I could see straight after about 10 minutes. Did NOT puke!!!!!! :)

Finished Day 2 in 14th place. The top 12 qualified for Nationals and I did beat a few guys who are already qualified.

Give me a few minutes to post more pics...

Well, I set PR's on nearly every event, pushed things as hard as I could, and felt great about my performance. I gave it all I had and placed top 15 like I wanted. There is talk about opening up Pro Nationals to everyone (because some people got the shaft this year), so we will see where I go from here.

I was COMPETITIVE with some of the best competitors in the US as well as the World this past weekend. I am still weak and injured, which is actually a good sign. If people are noticing that I'm competitive when I'm weak and injured...just imagine where I'll be when I'm healthy and stronger.

Fox Sports Midwest should air coverage in the next 2-5 weeks, I'll keep everyone posted for sure. I hope that my interview makes it on the air and I don't sound too crazy, especially right after the events...lol.

Thanks so much for all the support, especially from www.IronTrybe.com, my family, Nefi, and the crew who supported me all weekend (Brian, Ginger, Kasey, and Kim). I had a blast and can't wait to do it all again soon.

Here are lots of random pics from the weekend:

I know that Nefi and Ginger both have a lot more pics and Ginger snuck a video of me doing the medley...hopefully I can add them as soon as I get them in the next day or two.

Enjoy!!!!

Congatulations on your finish!!

Hopefully, your hamstring will get better before your next contest.

Clint I'm so proud of you :) I knew youd do great. And Im happy to see you feeling good about your performance!! You rock! Great pics and it's so nice to see Nefi was there to support you :)

PS. I had a dream about you last night. Somehow we met at a Strongman event and i finally got that big ol hug youve been promising!!

oh man

thats awsome

so are you gonna compete again this year?
and not on a holiday so i can make it.
did your mom have a good mother's day there?

Damn, competed with some of the best in the world and the best of the US and held your own while injured. Like I've I said before I want to see you healthy and at your best cause I know you'll give anyone a run for their money and more. Great Job, it takes a lot of guts to put it on the line two days in a row.

That is one weird viking press, looks real awkward same with the squat, atf style

Truly awesome big man. Good to see you doing so well while still injured. Also looks like you had a great time doing it and hopefully this will help you get even better for when you are healthy again.

Hope they put your interview on when they televise that will be good to hear you after the struggle you put up.

Cheers,
Scotsman

If they don't open up Nationals to all IFSA-USA card holders...it may be my last this year. If I don't compete there, I may compete over seas later this year when I move. I'll be back next year though...you can count on that.

We are having a contest here at my home on July 10th.

My mother had a great mother's day. Said it couldn't have been better. Both she and Nefi cried several times on different events when I did well, set PR's, and pumped up the crowd a lot. My mother has not seen me compete in about 18 months and I had a BAD day when I did. She was proud...and so was I.

Clint looking leaner these days :)

nice work

That's what I was thinking, too!

B Fold, I swear, if you ever make the decision to join the Dark Side and bodybuild, you'd be awesome. Your forearms alone should assure you a top five placing in a good show!

That ain't to diminish your performance in this show, though. Impressive stuff...going back out there with your leg wrapped up shows you've got balls of solid rock. Truly inspirational.

Thanks.

My sponsors at www.irontrybe.com have really helped me with my diet. I've been working to increase clean kcals, adding in prot shakes, increasing fluid intake, and I've REALLY increased my cardio work as well as intensity on event training. Getting ready for this contest I would do some type of cardio work 3-4x per week.

Also note that out of 22 competitors this past weekend...there were 19 of them BIGGER than I am. I'm one of the "small" guys out there in this sport.

Maybe the reason why I love this sport is that size really doesn't matter. There comes a time when the athlete has to step out on the field and let their body, heart, mind, and performance speak for them. There aren't subjective opinions or politics...just performance.

I once read a shirt I love..."If it doesn't draw blood, it ain't a strength sport." :)

Nice. It shows, too, though I've never seen you anything like "fat." If anything, I really like the strongman "look" best...it, to me, epitomizes what bodybuilding should be about: a big, powerful prescence that not only projects strength, but can deliver it in spades.

*whistles* Hard to believe! But as I was saying, it's rare that I've seen a skinny strongman.

NICE! LOL.

There's definitely something to be said for a sport in which the subjective stuff is curtailed, too. Bodybuilding frustrates me in that respect...judges seem so fickle at all levels, especially the highest, and I often come away thinking, "Just what were they looking for?!" At one contest, the most complete but smaller guy wins; at another, he's barely given consideration, and a dude built like a refrigerator (with a big cow belly and weird oily "lumps" no less) gets all the attention. Oy...
