Squatting with no rack-using a bench?

Same situation here. It hasn't really hindered me very much. Just stop a bit short of failure.

If strength is what you're after, muscle failure isn't that important anyway.

That said I did get stuck at the bottom once, on the box.... it wasn't very pleasant.

try barbell hack squats...like a deadlift but you stand on the other side of the bar and lift the weight up behind your legs...you may need a board to stand on.to raise your heels so you wont fall over
