Squats v Lunges

A couples of questions:

- Which is the better overall mass builder?

- Do they train the same muscle groups, AND, if so, is it worth incorporating both exercises into your training schedule? What about going heavy with one and light with the other?
 
Squats are by far the most effective exercise for mass on the legs and overall the whole body. Lunges are okay, but you really can't replace squats with anything. Lunges train the hamsm glutes and quads, but squats train and stress the whole body.

Stick with squats and you won't be dissapointed. Check out madcow's 5x5 thread to learn more about how squats effect the whole body.
 
overall mass builder, I would have to say squats. its a safer more powerful means of overloading. as for the benefits of lunges: stability, balance, coordination, unilateral strength. for an athlete I wouldnt discount both. i think its worth incorporating both.
