Squats or DEADLIFTS?

Lililston

New member
I hate doing squats but I still do them because I know it's a real important exercise :o

But I LOVE deadlifts: good mornings, SLDL's, sumo's, etc. I love all kinds of deadlifts! :fro:

They hit two different target areas, so it isn't like they are interchangable brother in my opinion. Squats hit the Quads primarily. Deads--the Spinal Erectors. Both hit the Hammies hard as a secondary muscle group however, but that doesn't mean you can switch one for the other.

If your lower back is giving you trouble from doing both of them, then just try spacing them a little further apart. Personally, if I were going heavy on them(which I don't anymore, although I still do them light), I wouldn't be doing either more than once per month. Since I go light on both though, I do them every Quad & Back workout.

I don't know why but I was like scared of doing squats, but then in gym class we started the weight room and I ended up doing squats and the teacher came up to me and said great job, usually no one can or does go down fully and you do. I look forward to doing squats now, there are so great. you must keep them in your routine. don't worry about anything, start off with light weight to get your form good..

hating squats is like hating air.

LOL...I'm forced to disagree. I will never like squats or deads, although I'll never stop doing them either.

Liliston - Lifting is not about doing only the fun stuff like chest and arms. It's about doing the shitty excercises you hate like Arnold Presses and Squats. That's part of what separates the men from the boys in the gym.

Also, MBH you'll like this.....A buddy of mine always says that if you like squats, you're doing them incorrectly :).

Everyone hates some day of exercise, but if your in it for the long run and your really a man, then you will do them every week.

I agree, I dont like squats that much but i LOve deadlifting...
But I still do squats because i want sum big wheels.

I just do them a few days apart to help my lower back out so its not done from the squats or dl's.

Keep it up bro

I like squats and deadlifts, I don't see why it's so hard to understand. It's a thrill and a personal struggle every time you do them. I doubt sprinters feel like the big race was a piece of cake, but most of them probably enjoy what they're doing, even if they felt like dying afterwards.

Do you guys include barbell squats in your workout ALL the time??

Or do you switch another kind of squat exercise(like frontal squats or overhead squats) in favor of the barbell squats??

not true... I like squats cuase its my strongest lift :)

Lili- I have back & front squats in my leg workouts. The only lifts that I cycle are deads & cleans for obvious reasons.

BOTH !

They are different exercices that target differents muscles

Do both of them and you'll learn to love them (actually you will love the results)

How can you do back squats in every leg workout?! lol doesn't that bore you? :bawling:

That's what I do now though and it's so boring that's why I hate squats;)

I hate squats as much as I hate doing sit-ups

You sometimes have to do things that you don't like :D

yup... squats 2/wk. I cant be bored-- Im concertrating on not dropping 200 lbs on the floor...lol. Seriously, if your bored- you might try loading up the weight so your more challenged or doing a 20-rep squat set-- you will feel more sick than bored :)

wow 200 lbs?! (free weights or with a smith machine)? I'm lifting only 35 lbs right now :D
I can't go heavy because I just started doing squats a couple of weeks ago, I'm still working on my form...

I tried adding a couple more pounds but I lean forward more

I hate both of them but I do still do 'em.

However, it can get pretty taxing on the back if you are constantly going heavy, especially considering if you do other exercises like stiff legged deads, good mornings, bb rows, etc which also put a lot of stress on the back. You don't want to be getting back probs while you're still in your 20's or so.

If you are squatting or deading more than once a week I don't think you have hitting them hard enough. Either that or you are doing something wrong form wise. When I squat and dead I need at least a week to recoup. I'd absolutely kill my back if I did any of those more than once a week.

35lbs? Hows this possible? A barbell usually weighs 45lbs

A rotator obliterating excersize. An unwise choice for an exercise.

On a good day, when I'm amped up for legs, I love both. A good heavy set of squats with perfect form, feels like heaven! I love/hate the burn that sets in right after you rack the bar! Mmm.... Deads are fun too! You get to throw lots of plates on the bar!
