Squating and your spine (L5)?

I am not a platnum member so I can't use the search function so could someone please point me in the right direction as to where I can get some info and the squat and the effects of your spine especially the L5 area.

I was talking to my Chiro today and out of curiosity asked him what he thought about the squat and dead lift. He is 100% against it, saying it puts too much pressure on the L5 when that much weight is on your back/spine. I am not very educated on this subject as I just started doing squats after finding this board. He wants me to do polaties instead of lifting weights.

I know the subject will come up again so can someone either chime in in this subject here or at least point me in the right direction as far as info goes.

Thanks.

Pilates? Come on. You've got to be kidding. Proper form and strong supporting muscles = no injuries.

You can squat & DL w/out toasting your spine. Just be smart. Leave your ego at the door. And you DO need to work the crap out of your core if you want to be in this game for a long time.

It's easier said than done, but it can be done.

Don't get me wrong, there is no way I'm ging to stop lifting and start doing Pilaties. I just want some info to support my case that if the squat is done properly there the spine shouldn't be compramised.

I dont have an article that directly tells you the effect squatting has on you L5. i will tell you, however, that I bulged my L5-S1 while squatting in March of last year. man, didn't that really suck, hurt so bad, it took me 10 minutes just to put on my shoes, and that was with pain killers, and muscle relaxers! i was told i only had an 80% chance of recovery. all i could really do for 3 months was lay around, and think about how much i wanted to be in the gym. (true story.)
anyway, dont mean to scare you. my back in damn close to 100% now, and I am back to lifting heavy (just hit 565, @ body weight of 205.)

Just bring in an article about Louie Simmons and his breaking his back.

And coming back to have one of the highest totals in his age class. Dangerous my ass. It is 'doctors' and gym trainers who have no idea how to lift who are the real danger.
