is it bad to go too low on the squats? i find it feels much better to go really low, but i always am told that going to low is really bad for my knees. whats the deal?

It's actually easier on the knees to squat below parallel.

Google "squat technique" and ignore anything that says stop at 90 degrees.

It is bad to go TOO LOW. But it's best to go below parallel. Just go as low as you can without ruining your form.

yea i suppose it's bad to go so low that your ass is on the floor... but where did you learn that it's bad to go low. do watch some olympic lifting on youtube in your free time.

I do go below parallel. I couldn't remember the reasoning for not going too low. But I think it may have been something along what thebadguy said. Go as low as possible. But for some people, when they go too low, they begin to bend their back and lose the proper form. So although we should advise people to go below parallel, we should also add, if possible.

go as low as you can without "relaxing your back". its hard to explain but some people (and i used to as well) go so low that my lowerback started to round and ass point in a little too much, and the stress shifted on and off my back during the process....which unfuckingfortunately leads to injury

I go just below parallel.

I have also been told from an old friend who was studying kenesiology(sp?) that it was biomechanically bad for your knees to go past parallel. Too much stress on the upward motion or something?

i wouldnt trust a kines major's opinon on biomechanics, just IMO

For front squats, I find it easier to get my arse very close to ground without stress on back bothering me. For back squats, I feel like I have to not go as low, but still below parallel

does he squat?

anyway this has to be the amongst the biggest myths in bodybuilding.

NOTE: i say bodybuilding and not weightlifting because if you've watched olympic lifting you'll see them go VERY deep.

parallel or around there unless you are doing a full PL squat (wide stance) is going to keep that stress right on those knees. changing directions at this point actually causes your knees to act as brakes. going nice and deep transfers the load to the hip joint which is obviously much larger and stronger and can thus bear the load better.

Your friend doesn't know how to squat.

Squatting below parallel is a natural functional movment that everyone should do. We were born in a full squat position. Ever see an ultrasound picture of a baby... that little fucker is squatting in there. His legs are past 90 degrees. Humans have been doing squats for thousands of years... that how they sat before chairs were invented bro. Ever see those African chicks on TV with their titties dangling all over the place? See when they are working on something on the floor? They are doing a full squat.

Kinesiology class doesn't teach you to squat. Squatting teaches you to squat.

lol to add to this, ever tried taking a dump in the wilderness when you go camping.... do you squat past parallel or do you hold it at around 90 degrees!? :D

I actually try to hover at around 90. Otherwise you might just dump in your draws. :)

As far as squatting in nature, I see your point, but those african ladies and cavemen weren't doing this with a 500 lb cow on their back either.

Is that where "ass in the grass" squats came from? lol
