soy protein and herpes

tanman

New member
I am relatively new here so I want to say hi to everyone here and let you in on something I have discovered. Soy protein may not be a good choice to those of you that are afflicted with the occasional cold sore. The amnio acid profile shows that soy proteins have a much ratio of arginine / lysine. What does this matter you ask. It seems that scientists have discovered that a diet high in arginine may cause more frequent outbreaks while a diet high in lysine seems to reduce the number of outbreaks. On a comparative basis soy's profile of lysine to arginine is around .78 while whey protein is around 3.2

I usually get around 2 cold sores a year and just changed my diet around to incorporate more soy protein and bam I got one this week. I guess from now on I'll stick to whey.

For years now I don't add any arginine, especially arginine supplements, as I saw that when I did, I experienced exactly what tanman experienced. I wasn't sure if it was just me, I learned then to not add it. It may help nutritionally, but at what cost?!

Soy protein is generally not a good protein source. Companies use it in protein bars, protein shakes etc because it is much cheaper then whey protein.

A high quality whey protein isolate is always your best option. It has the highest biological value of any protein source available. It is extremely easily digesting and full of the branch chained amino acids.

unless you are female I would stay away from lots of soy protein. It doesn't actually make estrogen spike but it does do something similar.

"Soybeans contain isoflavones, which are chemically similar to estrogens"
