Some thoughts on routine selection and growth

Here's something you see a lot of:
"Which bicep/delt/leg/back/chest routine will give me that/those unbelievable peak/cuts/roundness/size?!?!1111 Thanks."

Firstly, I do not insult people who make threads like this because I understand their reasoning. "Find person will successful trait X, and emulate their behavior to obtain that trait," or, "do what successful people do." Well that's generally a good philosophy.

So people will post up a thread like that. Here's a generic one: "My biceps have trouble growing. What should I do? Here's my current routine: (some standing curls, some sitting, mix of barbells and dumbbells)

People will chime in with "try doing these exercises, try changing this frequency, or try changing volume."

I think this advice is a tad faulty. Why?

Look around. Everybody's doing the same movements!!! There's really only two things you can do for chest: presses and flyes. There's really only two things you can do for quads: presses (squats) or extension. There's really only three things you can do for shoulders: presses, raises, or upright rows.

When you see somebody with that perfect bodypart and wonder what they did to get it, the answer is not a list of exercises, sets, reps, and weights.

I have a really good chest and shoulder shape. It's genetic. My chest looks better at 160-170 than a lot of guys I've seen who do roids and weigh 220+. If someone asks me my chest routine, I'll tell them. (dips and slight incline presses). If they do my routine, their chest will probably grow. But it will never make their chest look like my chest.

You can gain a lot of size naturally. You can gain even more size with roids, and they will slightly accentuate the growth of your shoulder girdle bodyparts. Gained size will change the overall look of your body significantly. But making a muscle bigger will not change its shape. If you have flat, unimpressive biceps, like me, growth will just result in thicker biceps that are still flat and unimpressive. Mr Universes probably already looked pretty good before they ever thought of stepping on stage.

I say this not to make people pessimistic, but to remove false hope. If one's gains are more in line with what one expects, then one will avoid frustration and weight training will be a more rewarding venture.

Bravo !!! And the crowd stands up and applauses !!!.

Your absolutely right Casual.

And just one example.... One can look at Mr. O`s (former or current) and usually see they have one bicep with a better peak than the other bicep. Does one actually believe that they trained one bicep harder than the other !!! Doesn`t one think that, this Mr. O did everything in his God given power to put a peak on the bicep that didn`t have such a great peak !!! Of course he did. The only thing and I repeat the only thing that was limiting the peak on his less peaked bicep was genetics.

Its sucks eggs, its lousy, its not fair but thats just the way it is.

Very good write Casual.

Pump on .....

This is a great thread.

And only partly because that it's good information. The real reason is that I'm getting tired of spending time replying to all those thinking that merely mimicking someone's routine will net them the same results. Now, all I have to say is this:

Go here.

Good post..I think a lot of people don't know where their strengths may be...ie naturally good chest\back\whatever...takes some time to figure that out... I think with hard work your "weak points" can be vastly improved...though I will never have a bicep peak:)

I have also observed the disproportional growth of the shoulder girdle muscles from those who are on roids...would you mind citing an article as to why this happens? I'm guessing it is something to do with the receptors?

Good post. Like Dr. Squat's philosophy, "Line up the origin and insertion of your targeted muscle, and lift the damned bar! Don’t get cute!"

I don't know of any articles or experiments. I heard Bryan Haycock (hst innovator) say that in those muscles the androgen receptor upregulates more, so they are in a way more sensitive to androgens. Since I'm thoroughly convinced he knows his stuff I take it at face value.

good post bro..I agree there are ohh so many moves u can do..but its the way that u do them..Im sure u see it a lot people just sort of in the gym doing this or that with no rhyme or reason..or how bout those that think heavy is 1 rep in which the spotter does more work thean the person lifting..genetics are genetics..my bi's have no peak (oh well) yet there are some less ensible people that think they can build a peak!!!

I am curious about the gear and its affect on the shoulders..i saw you post that the other day..

Outstanding cas. In fact, the real magic happens when you let the reality of genetic limitation sink deep into your soul, really be accepted. Then ask yourself what you can really do. A muscle contracts or not. It adapts to new loads. It's shape is genetic. Let it sink in deep, let it take root, and then, yet another mentzerian epiphany occurs. Such energy, growth and sense of direction . . .

Casual's words are like a zen koan, the more you meditate on them FOR YOU, the closer you are to what Boyer Coe calls "finding the [iron path]", the secret, the key.

But then you have to deal with the sadness of watching people swim around in self-delusion.

something to do with the shoudler/trap region having more receptor sites that just blow up on roids, more so than other bodyparts

a dead give away for anyone using usually :)
