Software Question.

the recovery people? how much does that cost? I'd rather buy a new hard disk for like 100, and have your old hard disk piggybacked to the new one, install the opertaing system on the new disk, and see if it'll let you access the old disk drive with all the pictures. now I realize your time might be valueable so you might not want to do this.

Or you could try the tried and true method of unplugging and replugging the IDE cable that plugs into your disk drive and mother board.

It's really a question of time with the babies vs. time fixing this. I'll pull the IDE cable tonight and see if that works. Thanks NB for your input. :)

I have a machine that has xp as the OS and it went boom and I get this message about not being able to start the system, etc. And at the bottom of the screen are the options for

Safe mode
Safe mode Network
Safe mode Command Prompt

Start Windows XP in normal mode.

Start with last working configuration.

EACH OPTION Leads to a blue screen that says Cannot Mount Volume. A long message about possible hardware conflicts and a hex reference.

Any suggestions as to a course of action will be greatly appreciated.

Was this machine upgraded from another OS. If so did the Hardware Compatibility List get checked on Microsofts site? You might just need a newer harware driver but it sounds like the HD might have taken a dump.

if the harddrive had taken a shit you would not get the XP faulty boot options....

not always true. XP has a reserved portion of unused space it uses at bootup. then it moves to the regular volume on a partition to load it's system files.

Cool...will do.

This is the second drive in two weeks too. First one was structural and this one is the internal boot drive. I should know better than to store data on it!

my best advice so this doesn't happen again, SAVE EVERYTHING IN CD ARCHIVES....i got like a couple 100gigs of information of cds so i don't worry about the harddrives....just saves me frustration
