so tired of idiots in the gym

young guns

well i figured i'd share this with everyone, since i have no doubt you all have to put up with the same shit at times.

so yesterday i got into the gym to hit legs, and what do you know, there's someone on the squat rack - DOIN CURLS. so i started stretching, hoping he'd finish up. the first set i see him do was 95lbs, and not one single rep was done correctly. from the moment he began liftin the first rep, he began the air f**k - you know, up onto the toes as the pelvis thrusts forward and the upper torse leans back real far, all in an attempt to "curl" a weight that is obviously too much. so i'm thinkin, well if he struggled that bad that was probably his last set. of course, i was wrong. he proceeds to add 20lbs. so now i'm beginning to wonder what this dumbass could possibly be thinking. and it occured to me, he is thinking he is doing curls, and he is thinking he is strong because he now has 115 on the bar. so i asked him how many more sets he had left, thinking there's no way he could have more than 1 left. WRONG AGAIN. he pleasantly told me he had 4 sets left. what an asshole. apparantly, he felt the need to do curls on the squat rack since he wouldn't want to work his back legs by lifting the weight off the floor. he rather just arch his back until his spine snaps in the process of trying to "curl". so i decided to do squats on the other rack - the cage type rack, which has no mirror in front for me to make sure i'm going down to the right level. belive me it's not vanity - i have trouble gauging if i'm going down far enough when i start to struggle with those last few reps, and as a result sometimes go too far in an attempt to make sure i have gone down far enough. well i got through all my warmups and my working sets in the time this jackass did 3 of his last 4 sets of air f**k curls. and i forgot to mention, he did add another 20 lbs on the bar for his last set. yeah, he couldn't even curl 95lbs correctly and now he's trying to curl 135.

well that's my rant. too bad these things will continue happening to most of us.

People are usually willing to move if asked. Part of the problem is nobody's ever bothered them before, just seethed silently to themselves, so they don't even know. This dude was on the one power cage doing curls (god I hate my gym), doing exactly what you described. I was feeling crabby, so I walked over and said "excuse me, would you mind doing these outside the rack? I can't do squats anywhere else." He was like "Oh serious? No problem," and moved. You can't let people get away with that stuff.

Let me make a suggestion that might help you out in going down far enouch on the cage when you don't have a mirror.

See, for me, the mirror is not enough - it might be if i could have a side view, but I can't figure out how to swing that.

Anyway, you know those side bars that you slide out and slide in to keep the bar from falling to the ground if you have a failure? MEasure how far down you want to go with an empty bar, and then slide the side bars into the next lowest position.

This way, when you go down, you know to go just above those side bars.

When I do squats, to make sure I go down far enough, I put those side bars in and drop down just barely enough not to touch them.

On a side note, I do my barbell curls with one of the flat bench racks (uh-oh). Eh, don't blame me - the only 45 lbs bars in the gym are on the flat benches, squat cage, and military press.

Good luck.

yeah you're probably right. most considerate people would be kind enough to move. the thing is that cage was open so i had a place to do squats. so i didn't want to get into a pissing contest with the guy over why he should move for me.

it just irritates me that that was the reason he was occupying the squat rack. and me having to use the cage for sqauts holds up other people. it's the only place to do any kinda of deadlift variation that involves the rack, and it's really the only logical place to do Bbell shrugs (i wouldn't expect someone to pick that up off that floor. as a matter of fact, it's the only place to do deads period. the way my gym is set up, the rubber mats don't cover the whole floor, and one of the gym rules is that you are not to put weights on the floor where there's no rubber. in front of the rack is the only space big enough for deads that has the rubber mat down.

thanks for the suggestions bro. i actually did have to do that when i used the cage since there's no mirror in front of it, only in front of the squat rack.

haha, it's all good doing it on the bench rack. if you're gym is anything like mine then there are several bench racks. and in my gym, they're almost never all occupied. on the other hand, there is only one squat rack, and then a power cage.

the only reason i said the guy should just pick the weight up off the floor is because his form was so god-awful that he was already working his back. he may as well have bent down to pick the weight up to add a little bit to that low back workout he was doing.

I'm with Casual on this. You can't just sit back and let your anger build up, or else one day you may snap at the guy or someone like him. Next time just say, "hey bro, would you mind if you used the rack over there. This is the only squat rack with a mirror, and I need to work on my form." If he is a dick about it and doesn't let you use it, then just shrug it off, knowing you are the better person.

....

I had the same thing happen to me about a month ago. The guy actually had 135 loaded on the bar and he thought he was doing curls, in reality he was doing reverse hang cleans. A funny site to watch.
