So it looks like the PS3 is finally hacked!

I may finally pick one up, only after hearing from others experiences of course. I'm also curious to see what a PS firmware update will do in the future.

The PS3 jailbroken? USB hack allows homebrew, copied games

The PlayStation 3 has long been a popular plaything for modders due to the ability to run Linux on the hardware, a feature Sony has since removed, supposedly out of fear of software piracy. Unfortunately, it looks as if Sony is facing the worst-case scenario as a new product called "PS Jailbreak" claims to be able to unlock your system to allow game backups, custom firmware, and all other sorts of shenanigans.
Point, click, hack

The device is said to be simple to use, with nothing to install and no warranties to break by opening your hardware. It is also supposed to work on both older systems and the newer Slims. Simply connect the USB stick, follow the onscreen instructions, and soon you'll be able to dump PlayStation 3 games directly to your hard drive. These games are said to run faster than playing from the disc, and you no longer have to worry about placing the discs in the system to play. Convenient!

Ozmodchips has created a video to convince all the doubters out there and is currently taking preorders on the $150 product. Take a look.

Also noticed the price on the website was 169.99 - wasn't sure if it is picking up different cost depending on location.

That it simply plugs into the USB is too funny - it's just like the PS1 console that had the gameshark port. Sony has gots to be bittersweet, I bet the console sales will actually spike.

I have been looking into this. I am not computer minded but quite the game lover.

can't wait to see CFW running on a PS3.

honestly surprised it's taken this long for someone to figure this out, especially since it seems so simple to do.

So PS3 had its cherry popped, but it probably won't be long before Sony applies the rape kit via mandatory firmware update.

Ironically for Sony the hack came at an ideal time if it lasts at all, now that they're finally making money off the hardware (which would likely see a gradual sales spike from this) to offset some of the software losses they'd see.
