I joined a jow ga kung fu dojo recently, its pretty cool. Anyone know much about this style, have any tips, etc? There is some info at http://www.jowgakungfu.com/ for my dojo. I think some kung fu styles have belt systems, but this dojo does not, in case that means anything to any of you.

Hoy Lee is a good teacher ! Hes well Respected in the Community and hes an EXCELLENT person to learn ESPECIALLY the Basics (the most Important) from ! Things tht othrs "Dont See The Purposse For" you will be reaping the Benifits of for YEARS to Come . Try to look into the Taijiquan program after the first 1-3 years . It is a very good way to develop your Conectivity at a more advanced Rate .

Oh , and FYI , Chinese schools are not called "Dojo" they are referred to a "Kwoon"s or "Gwan"s - depending on the Dialect . And your Instructor is usually referred to as "Sifu" , or simply by name .

thanks for the tips bro :) i didn't know about the "kwoon" or "gwan" thing. everyone calls him sifu, though, so I am used to that. :)

I call my instructor by name
but that's probubly because we are friends
I think he used to be called Sifu back when he taught a bigger class
I can't recall tho

i guess the site is down today for some reason :whatever:

tonight's my second class, so I don't really know much of anything yet, I'm still working on mastering the basic punches and stances. And yes, I like it so far. I know that after you learn the first form and display some amount of self discipline, you start learning weapon forms.

no judo? i mostly joined kung fu (this place in particular) cuz of my buddy that invited me. I've always wanted to practice martial arts, so this seemed like a good way to start. Never really thought about judo much, I don't really know anything about it.

Toms just Needling you bud , its good to go with a Friend/Loved one , you can Drag them to Class when they dont want to go , and Vice Versa ! Also you have a Training Partner to work with/Compete against when your e OUT of Classes !

Once again , you have a GREAT Teacher there , follow his lead , and hell take you places you never thought your Body could go !

Thanks guys! I've only been through 2 classes, but I can already tell that sifu lee is genuinely concerned about helping the students better themselves. Its a great place over here, I love it :)

cool i think that is a great trait to look for in an instructor.

if i wasnt into competing i would def start training in weapons forms just for the fun of it..

and dont tell sensei but after im done competing in the senior divisions and i will probably start taking some type of kung fu as i feel it is a very cool 'complete art'

good luck..

post up some of the stuff you learn as your training progresses..

I have very little interest in weapons training
I would like to try some, but I would rather just get better at standardy martial arts
striking,grappling etc
maybe when I feel I am really good at that I'll take some weapons stuff
or the instructor said he might start us on some stick training

I always thought it would be cool to learn to fight with a Spear
I dunno if I ever will tho because I want to really get into the unarmed work
but it would be cool
I'd also like to learn some type of Bastardsword style
the Katana is just so Cliche...

yesterday in class, they actually started teaching the staff. (spear falls into the staff category). Pretty cool.

I finally started learning the first form, boy am I excited!! :D

oh and btw... I LOVE katanas..... I'd love to take kendo or something like that.... :)

I sort of want to try Kendo
but everyone puts Katana in movies and I'd just get sick of it
now, a Spear I'd seriously consider
and I wll probubly get into dual sticks because I think it can increase my overall handspeed and a friend of mine is getting into it

Mostly the ppl that still use the Spear are :

Wushu
Praying Mantis
Bajiquan
Xingyiquan

I just went to a kung fu tournament this weekend, the 2nd annual "all kung fu" tournament... it was pretty cool. I got to see a lot of neat stuff. My sifu's son, samson lee, is AMAZING. I saw him do his form with the chain whip, and it was nothing less than utterly impressive. He's 14, and he beat a woman that hasn't been beaten in over 20 years... anyways, it was a great tournament. I was going to go to the Wong 2005 tournament in DC, but I'll be going home that weekend, so I can't go :(
