So I just got a collections letter....

Yup, here's the funny part. It had my name on the letter, but went to an address I've never lived at in my entire life. It was from a Company called NCO financial systems. It said it was for an outstanding debt with verizon wireless of $614.70.

I called verizon directly and asked them WTF is going on as I do not owe them any money as my bill is current. The man on the phone looked it up and kept saying, "wow, this is weird". My account in fact was current. I went on to tell him how i've never lived at that address. He looked into it a little further and told me that this account was last active in June of 2001, and was charged off.

I've never had a collection in my life, and have no idea what this is. WTF should I do? I looked up some info online and it seems as though this NCO is some shady ass collection agency and once you contact them they harass the fuck out of you. So do I ignore it, or do I call them and tell them they have the wrong guy?

oh, and I just read that the statute of limitations for debt collection is 6 years. So even if this was my account (which it isn't) these motherfuckers can't legally collect on it anyways. I think...i have no idea how this works.

Poboy, you don't pay your bills. WTF do I do?

Check your credit report, if its not on there tell them to fuck off

I checked it a month or so ago when I bought my wife her mercedes. I have nothing on there from anyone that is deragatory. Actually, there has never been anything on my report from Verizon Wireless.

So should I call them and tell them to fuck off, or just disregard this letter?

Dude. I read the post and I think I remember someone talking about this on the news I think. I'm pretty sure it's a scam.

If you feel like having some fun at teh expense of scumbags then call them and tell them its from 2001 and nothing from verizon has ever showed up on your credit report, youve never lived at that address, etc
or just trash letter

Here's what the letter says.

The named creditor (verizon wireless) has placed this account with our office for collection. It is important that you forward payment in full.

If you choose not to respond to this notification, we will assign your account to a collector with instructions to collect the balance.

To assure proper credit, please put our internal account number PJR7** on your check or money order and enclose the lower portion of this letter with your payment. If you need to speak to a representative contact us at 800-477-1827.

Returned checks may be subject to the maximum fees allowed by your state. You may also make payment by visiting us onlilne at www.ncofinancial.com. YOur unique registration code is CPJR*********

Unless you notify this office within 30 days after recieving this notice that you dispute the validity of the debt or any portion thereof, this office will assume this debt is valid. If you notify this office in writing within 30 days from recieving this notice, this office will obtain verification of the debt or obtain a copy of the judgement and mail you a copy of such judgement or verification. If you request this office in writing 30 days after recieving this notice, this office will provide you with the name and address of the original creditor, if different from the current creditor.

I googled them, and apparently John stossel (dateline..or 20/20) had a special on it.

It's like a horror story. People have posted online that they have gotten calls like 32 times in one day. The operator will start pushing buttons when you try to talk. They talk shit, etc etc.

People send cease and desist orders and they don't stop. That's why i'm not sure if I just ignore it. I'm afraid if I contact them they'll smell blood and pull that kind of shit w/me.

that's funny... i had a collection agency call me the other day to tell me i owe the phone company $30. I said i did not, and since they called me on the actual phone line, how could I be in collections and still have my phone on?
he agreed and said he'd look into it.

today i got a check from the phone company for $2.27. ? they didn't owe me money.

Call them and tell them what you told us.

This is what I did in a similar situation. The first thing the guy said was "Ah, sir... You are no longer in collections..."

Give them a chance to back off then just have Verizon get back to them on it.

yeah, I'm pry gonna call them and just block my number.

Seriously though...google NCO financial complaints and read the stories. It's pretty shitty

I'm thinking these cocksuckers some how got ahold of this "write off" verizon did 8+ years ago and pry bought it from somebody for a few bucks. and now they're thinking i'm dumb enough to send them a check for $600 for some shit that:

a.) isn't mine
b.) too old to collect on

The letter did not contain "This is an attempt to collect a debt"
collections fail

The letter did not contain "This is an attempt to collect a debt"
collections fail

actually...It does say that at the very bottom.

It says:

This is an attempt to collect a debt. any information obtained will be used for that purpose. This is a communication from a debt collector.

If its not on your credit report it doesnt matter.

If it does show up, write a letter disputing the charge. Legally the burden of proof is on them to provide documentation that you owe this debt (which they obviously cant do) within 30 days. If that doesnt happen, call the credit folks and tell them to remove it.

Also, send the letter cerified mail with delivery confirmation.

So you think I should just ignore this since there is nothing on my credit report about it? Worry about disputing it if it shows up?

Yeah. If its not on your credit report it doesnt exist.

If its been 8 years (allegedly), its not going to show up either.

If youre worried about them harassing you, send them a letter saying you request they only contact you in writing from that point forward. Again, legally they have to oblige.

Well, When I called verizon they told me this account was from 2001 and it had been written off over 8 years ago. I have nothing on my credit about this.

From what I read online, even when you send them letters the company keeps on harassing you. They've been sued numerous times and just keep doing whatever they want. (I'm assuming this is why 20/20 or whoever did a special on them).

Oh, what about the part of the letter that says if I don't respond within 30 days they'll assume that the debt is valid.

Well if they harass you after you send the letter then you can sue them and get paid.

sure.. call them up.. that way they have your phone # too... and tell them where you work.. and your ssn to verify that it is you..

Tell them you're a banker lol!

You can send them all the "official" looking type letters if you want. Goes in the trash. That 30 day myth also is trash. They'll still harass you and your friends/families if they want. And if you call them, they know you exist and will pursue you further. As for 'suing them' they know 99.9% of people never do, so they don't care.

Remember they make their money BY HARASSING PEOPLE AND HAVING THEM FORCED TO SEND MONEY JUST TO STOP THE HARASSMENT. That's their business plan. Not owning the debt etc. means notning to them. If it says "Joe Blow SSN 123" that's good enough for them.

What to do? Ignore them. If you answer and it's a "may I speak to blah blah" crap - just say wrong number or you're his friend but this isn't his # anymore. They can't call anymore or you can file criminal harassment charges against them.

False.

It can stay on your credit report for 7 years from the date it went delinquent. If it went to collection in 2001 but they should you made some payment in 2003 thats when the 7 years restarts. It's probably 4 years from that date til they no longer sue you for the money. They just harass you for it.

8 years ago? Fuck, you had a cell phone when you were 6 years old? How?

I was 18 when this supposedly happened. Just graduated highschool. I had a cell phone then, but it wasn't that account number. The number I have no is the same one and account number I've always had.

Didnt they have any information like social etc? Anything to confirm the person? I would dispute it. Dont contact the NCO people.

So you were 18 and didn't pay your bill or you did?
Or it was wriitten off? But your account # is still the same as back then?

Something isn't adding up

BTW my wife gets a collection letter (ghetto one) every 6 months or so for a capitol one credit card she went delinquint 5 years ago

everytime it's a new or different company

she owed C.O. 2500$
some letters will say that for a balance

some will say like $800 lol

her credit is f---d for another 2-3 yrs anyhow because of this and a car repo (her ex husband paid the bills )

anyhow she walked away

different story I know, but the collections are scumbags

don't pay them

watch out for the flatbed for the benz orb:evil: j/k

That 7 year rule is bullshit also ive seen debts sold and re-opened past 10 years

No, this isn't my bill.

I've never even lived at the address listed on this bill. I called verizon to see WTF was going on and they said that account had been written off. I checked my credit report and there is nothing on there.

This isn't my account number either.

I'm going to call verizon today to get more information about this account.

Send me your soc# and DOB when you get a chance bro I can deal with those scumbags for you

The 7 year rule does apply as long as you dont admit that you are willing to pay the debt.

For instance, if a debt is 6 years and 11 months old and a collections retard calls you, and just to get them off the phone you say "Yeah, Ill call you back later to set up some sort of plan" then the 7 years resets.

Go on tohse boards. Count how many people send in those default "stop calling me" or "I give u 30 days to dispute" letters and the agency doesn't stop one bit. CA's know the feds never prosecute or do shit about this stuff nor does anyone ever sue (like what 0.0001%?). So game on!

The 7 year rule is just when it has to come off your credit report. They can resell the debt and come after you til the end of time because you still owe the money. They just don't have any legal recourse beyond hoping you'll eventually give in and settle. The debt can still pop up on your credit report; you just dispute it and have it removed.

I remmeber this quote from a ca owner in a tv expose: "Since no one ever sues and the government never does anything -- we can do whatever the F we want".

And he's right. CA's only stop hounding you if they think they'll get zero money and it's not worth their time. If you they think they can or are getting to you - they'll make your life a living hell until you send money (females, young people worried about their credit and immigrants/minorities are fantastic to go after). Government laws mean squat.

Well,

Just got off the phone with verizon again. I wanted to call and get more information about this account that is supposedly mine.

I was told that the final bill was sent out Jan. 14th 2002.

I asked her, "is that when you wrote it off and turned it over to CA"

she said, "yes"

I asked, "then why am I just now finding out about this"

She says, "they've probably tried to contact you before"

So we go back and forth for a while and I explain that I have never lived at this address and it's not my account I've never owed verizon money and that I don't even have a charge off on my credit and I just want to get some more information on this so I can inform the CA's they screwed up.

She asks me what my home number is, and I give it to her. She says "wow that's now what we have on this account" I said, what number do you have and she tells me "i can't give you that information at this time" WTF! So you want to bill me for shit, but can't give me the info on the account? NICE! She asks for my work number, I give that to her and again she says, "wow these aren't even close"

She gives me a number to call some VZW fraud center.

Fuck it, I'm not even going to call this CA company. They can't do shit anyways, they can't report to my credit since it's way past 7 years, and they're way past Colorado's SOL anyways.

I just wish I knew who the fuck opened an account in my name. Gah!

Wow, this shit is kinda crazy

No doubt.

I've had the same phone number since I was a kid. The only thing I can think of is that they've been calling that other house, and sending letters and shit for the past 8 years.

The only reason I even got this letter is because now that my wife works for USPS they all know us and they pulled it out and gave it to her.

The only thing I can't figure out is if this is in my name why has it never showed up on my credit? Maybe they used my name and a different SSN?

Identity Fraud is very popular these days. Heck some illegal or drug dealer or Russian scam artist somewhere tried to open an account with my SSN and Name few years back. Fortunately I put a hold on my credit report on creating new accounts.

As for what to do if you're a victim? Not much. Cops don't give a shit, vendors don't give a shit unless it's credit fraud, ca's just want your money and credit reporting agencies will make you jump through hoops to take things off your report.

Best thing to do --- hold onto your identiy as close as possible, watch your credit report and bank account closely and avoid debt.

Yeah, I monitor my credit all the time. Which is why I was shocked when this came in the mail.

my wife went through something similar. the last time she was on the phone with them they said they could clear it all up by just giving them her bank account number. she told them to fuck off or shed call the police. we havent heard anything since.
