So dips are more chest or more tri?

I've been using them for tri's. I hope it hasn't cut into my recovery time for chest. Maybe I should switch to close grip bench presses?

Depends alot on the width you use. If your hands are placed out wide itll be more chest, in closer will be more triceps. Personally, I dont even do them anymore, cuz I get more then enough chest work from incline and flat bench. When I do triceps I stick to skull crushers, standing extentions and cables. I used to do them alot though.

more chest-- but if you bend forward at your waist- more tris.

I think it's the exact opposite. The more you lean forward, the more it hits your chest. Also, if your arms are out wide it's more chest, and if you keep your arms back it's more tris.

Another note: on those videos (thanks MsBH) the guy goes really deep. I don't like going past where my upper arms are parallel to the floor b/c it's too much stress on the shoulders, IMO.

Depends on how you do them. If you stay straight up and down and keep your elbows in then it targets your tris. If you lean forward and tryo to hold your legs out behind you it hits your chest more...the more you can lean your body the more you approximate a push-up type position as opposed to dipping up and down.

just to back what people are saying...lean foward, more chest...straight up and down, tri's...try changing ur head positiion to change ur center of gravity

You can't isolate any part of the body, it's a compound lift... rather than trying to focus on arms or chest I just find the best groove and strap on max weight. Chest and tris both get burned into the ground.

close grips are the same, if you want to work your tris without chest do pushdowns or something :)

While it is true that keeping your elbows in and staying upright hits the tris more, I've found the best way to do dips is whatever feels natural to you. Your tris AND chest will get pounded if you just do them normally.

I just realized after typing this that tweakle pretty much said the exact same thing :)

A-men to that. I only go down to where my arm creates a 90-degree angle at the elbow. Anything lower causes discomfort.
