It seems kind of scary to think about. What's to stop the PM from doing this all the time?

It wouldn't be in his party’s best interest or the countries. This is the 10th minority government in Canadian history on average minority governments last about a year and a half. It is either the PM or the opposition that ask for a vote of none confidence typically when they can not agree on a piece of legislation etc. The idea of a minority government is for the parties to work together. However how long can you imagine a democrat and republican agreeing on issues? Not verylong EH! I still take our system kinks and all over Bush leading my country.

He is dissolving parlaiment and calling an election for a very good reason: right now, his party has a good shot at gaining a majority government. If he waits for the economy to worsen further, or risks the Dems getting into power in the States and causing a liberal rally here in Canada, the odds worsen significantly. Smart move by Harper and his party.

*The 'with brains' part excludes the Bloc Quebecois party
