Sniffing Ammonia

Lots of PL'ers and strongmen do it, I was wondering about getting some, not for every training session but for like pr attempts and going for 1rm and shit like that.

Is it dangerous to health? Iv read that it can damage nasal paassages and kill brain cells, but Iv also read its fine in moderation...

thoughts?
 
why may I ask? another mod on here said that it would be ok, which is why Im confused as Im getting mixed replies...

i would leave it alone for now man. taking a wif of amonia once in a while isnt going to hurt you. medical personel even use it on patients.

wait, you say to leave it then say it wont hurt me every once in a while. The reason I was asking is say Im maxing on a lift, iv I bought some of the little capsule things that you snap and use only once then I could just keep them in my gym bag for the times when I do a max or 1RM. But I wanted to know if it is a harmful substance or not, my mum was quite cautious about letting me have it or not so I said Ill try to find out what the health risks are.

it is harmful to the body, lungs, nasal passages, etc. It is a poison. If you aren't setting a world record you don't need it. Especially when you are still a teenager. Just keep lifting, eating and resting and the strength will come. You have a great start already. Try slapping yourself in the face, pushing your friends around or listening to pantera if you need to get pumped up.

I sniffed a bottle of ammonia in high school. Thought my brain was going to explode. lol.

its not good for you like a cigarette is not good for you. if you smoked 1 cigarette per week i serously duobt it would make an actual impact on your health but it still is bad for you. you are still a teenager. i think decisions like that one would be better made in a few years or so.

ok, damn I really wanted to try it, but ok. Is it addictive like cigarettes?
 
are you talking about the little things that people use to wake people up if they are unconscious? If so, it freaking hurts and it was not a pleasant experience. My buddy an EMT had one and I wanted to try it to see....it hurts and I will never do it again!

I work out with some of the best in the world of PLing and strongman. Never once have I seen any of them use ammonia caps, and in all of my years, I never have used them either.

In a former life as a paramedic, I once had to go deal with the victims of an ammonia spill at a manufacturing facility. 10 of them were ok on O2, but 4 of then ended up having to have an ET tube put down their trachea so that we could breathe for them. They had caustic chemical burns to their lungs.

Its bad stuff and does nothing for your lift.

dont get me wrong, i know that highly concentrated ammonia can kill, but the capsules powerlifters and strongmen use are a much lower concentration of the chemical... i work in refrigerated/frozen warehousing and if we have an ammonia leak, we are told TO GET OUT FAST and we have sensors and alarms for it, but they are set to detect certain levels deemed hazardous... in some parts of out facilities there are often VERY slight leaks, and it still smells a bit stronger than regular household ammonia... but still maybe a bit weaker than the capsules i've used in powerlifting... i believe the hazardous level is somthing like 1000x the concentration of household ammonia, maybe more...
i believe it is considered a resperatory stimulant...
...just some things to think about... i use it only at meets and every meet i have done i have seen plenty of others using it, so i dont think it is a banned substance in sports... just do some research and you will have to make an educated descision for yourself...

i used it afew weeks ago for the first time in forever. i was also going for an extremely heavy weight that i wouldnt normally do. ammonia poppers arent for many people. it makes you extremely uncomfortable. youre young. focus on lifting and eating. there will come a time for the next level. now isnt it. just to add, i wont be huffing ammonia again for a very long time after the last experience. it seems i have injured myself and i think the mental confusion the ammonia put me in took my focus off of my lift. did i get the lift? yes. do i regret it now? yes. my back is shit right now and i NEVER have had back problems. maybe if i wasnt so all over the place with that last pull, maybe i wouldnt be hurting now. who knows, just dont rush to do things you dont need. to put it all in perspective, you have people here who have been lifting longer than you have been alive and we rarely or never use it. i disagree with the health issues as its not like youre walking around daily huffing it. one pull every 6 to 8 weeks wont kill you. its just not necessary at your level.
