Smoking

No it does not effect muscle growth.

Studies have shown that there is a slight decrease in testosterone while experiencing the "high", but no permanent decreases or even moderate temporary decreases.

Citing: millions of times asking that questions myself and looking up articles on it.

BUT... smoking before bed does hinder sleep cycles which we know are important to muscle growth, so (if your training hard) tote your stuff 2-3 hours before bed, eat up all the food in your house, and pass out for a good 8-9 hours sleep.

Random question.. I know smoking boosts metabolism.. But does it affect muscle growth?

Smoking is bad period. It wreaks hell on your heart and lungs. And it suppresses hunger slightly, which is bad if you wanna gain mass. Instead of a smoke, jam a steak down your throat and see which makes you bigger.

if you aren't breathing well and your lungs are functioning shitty you will struggle to grow muscle compared to another dude who has full lungs going.

so smoking is very bad... this is not even a question. so if you smoke, quit.. not just for bodybuilding reasons but for your overall health :)

funny...Im wondering if there are two different versions of smoking by the answers

if were talking cigarettes....dont use it as an excuse to not train, and that includes cardio
half the military smokes and all of them have to pass their pt tests (including me) so no excuses on training
that said, obviously quit if you can. It tastes bad, smells bad, looks bad and nukes your lungs and heart...I just attended my step fathers funeral for emphysema (from asbestos but the disease will scare the shit out of you to watch, let alone live)
if not...I recently switched to e-cigs and weirdly theyre more "attractive" to me for my nicotine

^^^^^^^ that for sure

sucks for those that don't smoke and the people that do

My ex gf smoked 20-30 a day. And i never try to change anyone, but damn sad to see your close family slowly get sick from a drug thats not really giving u anything u cant get from something else :/

I smoke and honestly ever since I started I've hated my life. Don't start and if you have try get off them, I was warned by reformed smokers, people that still smoke but as a youngster I ignored them and thought I knew everything but i really knew jack shit. Now I've smoked for about 3 years and find it hard to go a day without one. Trust me and don't do it lol...

sounds like a really good advice :)

My training partner and I would more often than not take a ride and burn one before our workout. It helped with our focus and we overall had a better workout. Then, alot of times, after hours, when the gym was closed, we would hang back and burn one and have a couple beers with the owner. We never experienced adverse effects from smoking. My training partner only smoked cigarettes when he really partied a couple times a month and he had 19inch arms, won a ton of trophies, etc. Take it for what its worth.

nicotine just like any addiction will make you depressed if you don't have it.. then when you do it will only make you feel normal. when you don't do it you will go back to being depressed. addictions are the worst thing ever, it takes a lot of will power and many people cannot do it and it will control their life.

i've smoked cigarettes maybe once or twice in my life years ago.. it did nothing for me and thankfully i felt no desire to continue.

some people are more prone to addictions than others, I am not one of those people who are prone.

Cigarette smoking increases a person's metabolic rate in part by forcing the heart to beat faster. When a cigarette is inhaled, the smoker's heart may beat 10 to 20 times more per minute for a period of time. This causes extra stress on the heart and plays a role in heart disease, the most common cause of smoking-related death. And think about this: A smoking habit of 20 cigarettes a day puts approximately the same amount of stress on the heart as 90 pounds of extra weight would. When we stop smoking, heart rate slows down somewhat, causing metabolism to dip a bit as well.

Nicotine use triggers the release of dopamine in the brain, a neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of happiness and satisfaction. Exercise also releases this same brain chemical, but in a healthy way that allows us to enjoy the pleasant effects of dopamine without risking our health to do it.

I thought he meant marijuana use by the post, not cigarette use... Don't smoke cigarettes! They are horrible for you, the green stuff on the other hand... :supercool

Studies have shown that cigarette use can hinder muscle growth, causes looser skin and decreases lung capacity, all things a weightlifter should avoid at all cost!

Awesom great posts thanks guys! I did mean cigarettes btw.. Ive been lifting for a couple years and could never seem to gain any weight.. And about 3 months ago i inally quit cold turkey.. And ive gone from 165 to 205 since then.. Sounds hard to belive but im not lying.. So i was just wondering if anybody knew WHY smoking affects muscle growth i it even does.. Thanks bros!

I've been smoking cigs and lifting for years. I've been making solid progress in the gym year after year, and that's the problem. I know the cigs are bad, but its hard to be motivated to quit when things are going well. A lot of smokers will live healthy successful lives until one day, all of that "invisible" damage they've been enduring becomes self evident through a very serious health issue.

If smoking cigarettes caused me to no longer make gains in the gym id be much more motivated to quit. And that's the problem, it feels so damn good, gym is going so good, why quit? So, that's why people always say "don't start smoking", because once ur hooked, ur not only fighting nicotine addiction, your fighting your own perspective. I know damn well I should quit, tried many times and my strength/endurance never changed when on or off smokes, so I always ended back up to smoking.

If things are going well with smoking, imagine the possibilities with an increased lung capacity and a stronger heart.

Yeah ur right, things could probably be better all around if I didn't smoke. But until I can gather the will power to quit, there ain't nothing like a cig after an intense workout :D
