i have 2 hard drives. my d: drive, which has all my important stuff, is formated as NTFS. The permissions are set so only administrators can access it. What Im wondering is, suppose I were to take the drive out and put it in another computer...would the adminiistrator of that computer be able to accesss it?

what if I set the permissions to a certain user..then would anyone else be able to access it if I took the drive out and put it in different computer?

and finally..under permissions, whawt does the user "SYSTEM" mean.

If you move the entire drive then only the admin of the PC you are putting it on will be able to access it if the permissions are on an NTFS volume and set to admin.

As for any other permissions, they probably would not be able to access it unless they have an account on machine you are moving it to.

By default when a drive or volume is moved a new machine, most of the permissions that are set are locked and only the admin will be able to access it. Otherwise, NTFS and the permission structure would not be very secure.

The SYSTEM account normally refers to the local machine, which is the system.

so when I allow SYSTEM to access the drive, what exactly does that mean...that the computer can see it, but people cant? Should I always have it so SYSTEM can access stuff?

also, suppose my C: drive (with windows) was to fuck up. Would I be locked out of my D: drive (if the only permissions on it were for a perticular user and SYSTEM)?
