small talk in elevators

why is it everytime I go inside an elevator with somebody else I do not know they are inclined to make a comment about the weather or something stupid like that.

can't we all just shut up in elevators and return to our pathetic homes in silence ?

what makes us small talk in enclosed spaces ? insecurity ?
