Small question + Thank yous!!

Hey guys! I am an amateur weightlifter, and I've only lifted for over a year, but I have actually done really really well without taking any whey protein or steroids or anything crazy like that. (At least I think so) I haven't changed my diet at all (though I admit I crave meat more sometimes :)) but I've had great results with this weightlifting thing! Because of all of your help I am going through the 5x5 program and have had GREAT advice from all of you!! I am just making sure though: protein can only help, right? It's very expensive for my college budget (parents are visiting so they might spoil me with some;)) so whey protein will have to be taken in only "efficient" amounts. (1 scoop after workouts?) I want to stay pretty lean and just get more cut and defined, so I'm going to buy healthier foods this weekend. While I'm going I just want to know if you guys think protein would help me out. (I think I'm a mesomorph)

I'd appreciate advice on the protein, but I'd also just like to say thank you for all of your help guys! It is humbling that such great lifters can help a tiny amateur lifter out! Thanks again!! :)
