Slutskaya vs Cohen...

Reminded me of when Elvis Stoika waxed the floor with Brian Boitana in 1988.

Or when the Italian high bar gymnast made Paul Hamm look inferior in 2004.

Slutskaya is clearly a superior skater to our little darling.

Should we call the Olympics by another name?

I love sports but all of the corrupt bargains and financial machinations really, really, really upset me.

The best athlete with the best routine should win no matter what country provides the funding. The Olympics would do fine without American business interests turning it into a financial sceptical under a sports veneer.

Cohen came in like 3/10th higher than Slutskaya in the short program and by the new point system it was a better program. They are both superior to their competitors - Slutskaya has more overall strength and is a more powerfull jumper. Cohen on the other hand has superior edge sequences and transional moves between jumps and spins.

They are both my favorites - I wish they could both get gold.

Cohen still has the soul of a skater - Slutskaya is following through on her dream but her life has grown larger than being a figure skater whereas with Cohen being a figure skate is still her life.

Strenght and jumps > edge sequences and transitional moves

If you want perfect transitional moves, don't jump or leap about.

As a former figure skater with greater strength, speed and jumping skills I'd like to agree with you.

But the scoring has changed and transitional (at least one of us can spell) moves have become as important as the required moves (jumps, spins, combinations and footwork).

Hell, you have to qualify for the long program now.

In my day they still did figure eights prior to the freestyle.

So while you're probably right about "corrupt bargains and financial machinations" - I think you are wrong in this specific case (ladies short program) - no offense though, I'm impressed you watched the figure skating.

I will say this - Slutskaya IS the better skater.

Cohen turned in a magnificnet routine...however they are clearly trying to reign in the importance of strength and jumps.

Maybe that a good thing but I still judge a routine the way it used to be judged.

They should tell us that the new judging favors foo foo routines.

Besides, Slutskayas routine makes me want to *edited* her. And thats what us guys want to see...it makes us feel good.

I will ALWAYS watch female figure skating. It is one of my favorite things to do.

What do you think of them wearing pants now?

I figure its good for them and bad for us. It will make it easier on girls who are shy about their figures.

Cohen will win, her head is in it this year. Short routine was damn good. I am looking forward to watching them both.
Irena is a great skater, it should be a great comp.

Well, it's not a bad idea - quad jumps are just ugly to watch.

I'm all for strong powerful skaters but I think the new judging will bring back some of the quality performing that has been lacking the past 8 years, well at least I hope it will. You should be both a superior athlete and a good performer on the ice and I think that's the goal.

LOL - YES! Slutskaya is sexy, strong and desirable to watch and makes Cohen appear mousy in comparision.

Don't tell me I never gave you anything.

I like the additional option of pants or one piece bodysuits - gives the body a nice line but I like when the outfit is appropriate to the music but doesn't overshadow the actual skating. Sometimes the outfits are just too much - too distracting - too frilly or colorful.

Pants or one piece suits are not good for skaters with long torsos and short legs - they need to stick with dresses and nude skate covers. (Slutskaya has the perfect shape and height for a one piece)

You can't be shy with your body and be a fantasic skater.

Besides skaters usually don't wear undergarments - just stockings and the dress.

I'm warming up to idea of encouraging more foo foo routines.

Back to back triples makes the bar too high for 99% of the population I would think...even with a lot of training.

Some of the girls don't seem so exciting in their jumps. Slutskaya is just thrilling to watch.

Thanks for the pics....looks like I could clean up being a Russian photographer. :) If thats the best they could do.......

She will win if she doesn't fall down or stumble. The new rules favor her.

How old are the new rules?

Is it me or is there something erotic about talking woman's figure skating with two straight guys????

Hmmmm

Shizuka Arakawa won!
Holy Crap. Ack.
Cohen and Slutskaya fell - silver and bronze for them.

Jezzzzz it's 2002 all over again.

Hmmmm

I dunno. You like the guy on the Brawny towels?

People say I remind them of him. Pre-accident. I'm exercising some for a come back and all I have right now is a ...lot of pain.

Katarina Witt was a ice skating machine. Nobody was going to beat her. I think Sonja Henie might have been the greatest of all time though.

Sonja Henie (April 8, 1912 - October 12, 1969) was a Norwegian figure skater and actress. She is a three-time Olympic Champion (1928, 1932, 1936), a ten-time World Champion (1927-1936) and a six-time European Champion (1931-1936). AND, AND, SHE WAS VERY PRETTY DAMN IT. http://www.lucidcafe.com/library/96apr/96aprgifs/henie4.gif

As for Cohen she needs to do the honorable thing and fall on her sword. We shouldn't even let her back in the country.

I'm glad I ddin't see this thread before, you guys would have ruined the suspense for me tonight.

The winner has to be Carolina Kostner. She looked better than any other skater out there. (nice bum)

http://www.carolina-kostner.it/pictures/olympics/short/12.jpg

We were the winners when Kostner was cavorting about!

I dunno about Cohen winning the Silver. She fell TWICE. Falling is supposed to be very bad. Fall twice and you are out of the running.

Witt is a total cow - never liked her as a skater.
Too tall, too thick, too heavy on the ice and by heavy I mean she lands like a Buick thrown off a cliff.

Kostner has a lot of potenial, if her skating matures a bit and she can make it another 4 years she could do really well.

I need something that alerts me when they have ladies figure skating on TV.

What happens to retired figure skaters?

2.2 kids and a house in the burbs?

You spend the rest of your life fighting "retired skaters ass"....

... seriously, a lot teach, some do shows, TV hosts

I can relate. Getting my hip fractured from the red light runner has given my rear a 'retired' look. I'm getting very worried..it has been 10 months now.

If it doesn't get better in a couple months, I'll prolly have it replaced.

An extremely dismal scenario.

That will officially retire me from the singles scene. I doubt I'd get serious with a lady with a plastic hip.

A friend of mine married a girl with a fubar hip from an auto accident. He told me not to do it.

I haven't been able to get into the olympics this time. Every time I turn on the tv they have curling on. While it is a little interesting, I'm not going to sit and watch it for too long.

As for skating, the first one I remember watching was Dorothy Hamill. :p

The sport has gone down this year. Remember when France had that athletic black girl who did a back flip on the ice? I've never seen any other skater - male or female - do that. No falls either, but no medal as far as I remember.

Women's figure skating makes the games. I love hockey but the NHL was already playing, nothing new in the Oly's.
I seriously want to try the biathalon though. You know what kind of body/mind control it takes to be able to race then try to calm yourself enough to shoot? Not exciting to watch, but hell who can explain people watching golf either?

God, I can't remember her name to save my life, she was a great athlete but she had horrible style if you can call it style at all and was not a pleasure to watch - she too stiff, robotic and too heavy on the ice. Not to mention she had a bad bitchy attitude about her.

It's not a black thing in figure skating - anyone remember Debbie Thomas in 1988?

I'll pay to watch you skate.

In the nude. ;)

Velvett on Ice. Has a nice ring to it. Don't you think? I'm going to sit down to a cup of coffee with you.

We need more black female figure skaters. Black girls have got some devilish booty at times. :p

Instead.....we get Johhny Queer.

Never has a guy set off my gadar like that guy.

Hope you heal and heal quickly.

Yes I remember Debbie Thomas, now that you mention her, but I had definitely forgotten her. She has disappeared.

I have to disagree with you about Surya Bonaly's appeal though. Although I know little about figure skating she was a blast to watch! Plus her bitchiness added to the drama in a sometimes dull and stuffy sport. The judges didn't like her but the crowd loved her.

yah she did... if I recall I think she was pre-med during the olympics so maybe she became a doctor.

I can appreciate that - fans of skaters are different - it's like music - no one is going to enjoy the same kind all of the time. There is no doubt that she was a powerful athlete, sick strong and solid. I would be willing to bet that had she come to the Olympics now she may have been better received to the judges because if how much the sport has changed and "lossened up".

That said she's not my cup of tea skater wise LOL - but I'm old school.
