I need some info from you guys. Does sleeping too much affect the body building process (i.e., decrease in muscle growth, slower metabolism, etc.) ?
I'm curious because i usually go to sleep anywhere from 10:45pm-12:00am, wake up around 6:45am-7:00am, then some days ill nap @ 9am or 10am till like 12pm, then go work out around 2 or 3pm.
I LOVE to sleep :nighty: , but i'm thinking this is not really good for me, so i thought i'd check with some of you out there to see what you know.
Thanks.

It doesn't sound like you're getting too much, the body does need a lot of rest to accompllish the changes you're trying to make it do through training.

The only thing I'd wonder about is why you're sleeping so much. Is it because you get sleepy and need it, or just because it feels good to nap and you can (I understand this part totally).

If you're tired all the time in spite of sleeping many hours and napping, you could have a sleep disorder like sleep apnea where you're not getting enough deep sleep. This can have long-term consequences like heart attack and stroke if not treated, because your body is deprived of oxygen. Women can have sleep apnea, not just overweight middle-aged men. If you snore, there's a higher possiblity of apnea, but this is not a given. There are other sleep disorders that don't involve snoring.

You need good quality deep sleep for optimal recovery and muscle growth, and just to function your best. Everyone's sleep requirements vary. The old "8 hours" is not a hard and fast rule. Some do fine on 6, others must have 9+. A bad diet can also make you sleepy because you don't have enough energy.

Sleeping burns fewer calories because you're not active, but other than that I don't think there is anything dangerous about sleeping a lot. Look into why you're sleeping a lot.

I don't beleive that you are hurting your self in any way by sleeping this much. It would be better to get all your sleep at once, rather that napping in the afternoon. Your not getting the full benifet of the deep stages of sleep by taking a nap. Consider yourself lucky, most people couldn't sleep near that much. Remember sleep=growth.

Just make sure that you are getting enough food with all of your sleep. I used to take a nap before every training session a few years ago when schedules permitted. Now I try to lift within 3 hours of waking up in the morning.
