sks assault rifles

FBI

New member
who has shot one and what did you think?? also, i found a true pre-ban for $325 but i have to act fast if i want it. do ya'll think this is a good price?

They are a low maintenance assault rifle. Only 2 thing i don't like about them are the magazines and how it feeds into the gun. Not very easy to pop it out and slap another full mag in. Also the fact that the casing eject vertical not horizontal like other 7.62 x 39 rifles. Good chance of them landing on you or down your shirt and giving you a stinging burn. Besides that, i like the gun. Don't really need to clean it. For that price, thats kinda high. But nowadays they run about that price for Russian, Chinese. See if you can get a MAK-90 chinese or egyptian at the same price

I've shot them and they seemed OK. They aren't terribly accurate, but I don't think the 7.62 x 39 is terribly accurate in any gun its used in. Obviously, though, they get the job done. People seem to like the SKS because it's simple, reliable, and cheap. I remember when you could pick one up at a gun show for around $100. I've heard the price has gone up though. $325 may not be a bad deal, but I'm no gun afficionado, so I couldn't tell you for sure.

If I were you I would get an AK-47 instead. Mine is much more accurate than my friends SKS, and with a composite stock on them they look awesome. Besides it also shoots the 7.62x39 round. If you go to a gun show, you should be able to get around 1000 rounds for under $100. You cant beat that.

gtrcivic, i found a mac 90 for 275, 50 less than the sks. who's shot a mac 90? what caliber bullet does it fire? can you hunt with them?

I've got one they shoot 7.62x39, I love the gun! I bought a 100rd drum for it it weights 20lb fully loaded!

Pre Oct 1993?? you could purchase machine guns, then Clinton banned importation/manufacture of 20 assault weapons(machine guns): Ak, m16, Tec-9, Fabrique National, Sweetsweeper shotgun, Uzi, mac 10, etc.

So domestic manufacturers and overseas gun manufacturers were in a race before the bill was signed into law. Once made and stamped pre 1993 date, they were legal and for sale.

Post 1993, they are knockoffs MAK-90s , AR-15 type rifles that can be purchased. Couldn't come with a threaded barrel , flash suppresor , more than 10 rd magazine, pistol grip, retractable stock, couple other things. But can have 2 of the 3. But have 3, a big no no and ATF will be after your ASS.

Knockoff Ak-47's were relatively cheap $220 pre Sept 11, now run about $350up. Same goes for the AR-15, $600 to $1000 and up at gun shows in VA, NC area. Same goes for handguns, Glocks pre Sept 11 were going for $400, now $500and up.

Guess you can call me a gun enthusiast :D

So if I can find an AK stamped pre 1993 or whatever I can legally own it?? I'm in California.

Depends where you live- forget it in Cali. Worst gun laws in the country- NY is terrible too. I have had cases of SKS,AKM's,AK-47 etc. Realistically you shouldn't bother spending too much on them because you cant really use it in a legal situation. The courts would have a field day with you for using a "assault weapon". Get a Mossberg 12ga and a good .40 auto for home protection. If you want rifles like AK's you better have a good place to go out to shoot. In FL you can but anything as long as you pay the tax stamp. You can buy a full auto uzi in the original "spy case" as long as you pay for the firearm plus the tax stamp which I believe is around 250. Not all counties will do this however. But as far as getting "assault" type weapons on the West Coast- dont bother. Oh and I liked my Mac10- it was fun. To show you how differant the laws are consider this: I knew a guy who had his house raided for drugs and he had a SKS with folding stock, bayonet, flash supressor and a 30rd mag and the cops payed no attention to it. The looked at it and said "nice" then put it back down. HAHAH< that is great. They didn't give a rats ass. If that happened in Cali you would be FUCKED!!!

I dont know about California but you can get an AK-47 at any local gun show on the east coast for under $350. I got mine pre ban, and it IS legal to hunt with them as long as you only have a 5 round magazine in it. So I cary a 5 round magazine loaded in it into the woods, then swap it out for my 30 rounder. Best advice though is to change out all the wooden components on it for synthetic. Makes it more durable and they look awesome in all black. Just my .02

On a side note, some AK's you find, even though they are just semi automatic, will fire bursts of 3-4 rounds at a time. Mine does this every so often, or you can swap out your trigger mechanism for a hell fire one that gives you just about automatic fire. I love mine as you can tell.

You can still own 30 rd magazines they just dont bring them in the U.S anymore so the ones that are out there are fine to own and buy!

damn.. i live in Cali.. i'd love to own an AK.. or mp5.. just for the heck of it

MP5's aren't cheap- not the kind of firearms you get for the hell of it unless your wallet is FAT! As for getting firearms without a class 3-

It is a common misconception that machine guns cannot be owned by law-abiding citizens._ This comes from the creation of a variety of confusing laws that have made purchasing a full-auto gun more difficult than purchasing a "normal" gun._ But, you can comply with the law and own a machine gun.

___ First a little history:_ In May of 1986, certain laws went into effect that made it illegal for 'civilians' to own fully automatic firearms that were manufactured AFTER THAT DATE._ Most fully automatic weapons manufactured and registered BEFORE MAY, 1986, MAY BE OWNED BY AND SOLD TO INDIVIDUALS._ The full-auto guns that may be owned by individuals are called 'transferable'._ Some states DO NOT allow machine gun ownership at all, no matter when the gun was made, but most states do.

___ To purchase a transferable machine gun, you must meet certain requirements (generally the same as when you purchase another gun), fill out special paperwork (called a 'form 4'), and pay a $200, one-time, transfer tax._ Every time a machine gun is transferred, the $200 tax must be paid-- usually by the purchaser.__ The steps to take to purchase a transferable machine gun are:

1.

Find a dealer locally who can assist you in all phases of the transfer.__ This should go beyond helping you fill out the paperwork:_ they should help you locate the gun if it isn't in stock and allow you to shoot the gun while your paperwork is being processed by the BATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms).__ It will usually take 4-6 weeks for the dealer to get the gun from another dealer if they don't already have it in stock (due to BATF paperwork delays).

2.

Get your fingerprints (either by a police dept. or by a qualified fingerprinter, two imprints are needed) and two passport sized pictures taken.___ These will be used to perform a comprehensive criminal background check on you.

3.

Have your local dealer help you fill out an "Application for Tax Paid Transfer And Registration Of Firearm" for, known as a "form 4".

4.

You must have the signature of the Chief Law Enforcement (CLEO) officer that has jurisdiction over the municipality in which you live on the form 4._ This could be the City Chief or the CountySheriff, for example._ This is usually not a problem-- in machine gun friendly states. Like I said, some counties such as Hillsorough County,FL(where I lived) do not do this anymore, whereas other FL counties do.

5.

The form 4, CLEO signature, 2 fingerprint cards, 2 pictures, and a $200 check (your one-time transfer tax) must all be mailed to the BATF and an approved tax stamp returned before you may take possession of the gun._ This may take anywhere from 2 to 5 months.

That is all there is too it. You can buy a full auto .50 machine gun with a laser aiming device if you have the money.

Wow awesome post man. I will hit you up with some Karma tomorrow.

How much does the MP5 run typically?

And your above steps.. would that be possible in California.. or is it imposible here?

Get the Mak-90. Unless the SKS you're looking at has a detachable magazine, You've got a hell of a lot more capacity with the AK. You can even slap a 70 round drum on that sucker. Mags for AK's are plentiful too. And they're not flimsy like the AR mags out there. It is said that if you run out of ammo you can beat the enemy to death with your AK mags. ;)

I have an SKS and i love it. The thing is bad! I put a Draganov stock on it, couple with a metal vented hand guard, a couple 30 shot clips and that thing is ready. Mine is a machined Russian model. You can get a stamped Chinese one for less. The SKS was the precurser to the AK47, designed by Kalashnikov too. You want an MP5? Got an extra $3500? One thing to consider is an MP5 shoot 9mm. While an SKS or AK shoots a .308 (basically). A .308 will shoot through a vest, a 9mm won't.

Go for the Mak 90. On the subject of law in CA-check here:
http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/regagunfaqs.htm

and here is a good info link:
http://www.full-auto.com/library_laws.htm

What it looks like to me is they wont allow any more people to apply for "assault" registrations. The fucked up part is that each state determines what an "assault weapon" is. Retards.

The definition of an "assault rifle" is that 1)It must have a SELECTOR SWITCH. This allows it to switch from SAFE, to SEMI, to BURST, or to FULL AUTO. If it does not have this feature, then it is just an auto-loader, NOT a so-called "assault weapon". As a bit of unconfirmed history, Adolf Hitler wanted his troops to have something above the level of a rifle(Mauser K-98)& the machine pistol (MP-40), less than the machine gun (MG-42) and fired an intermediate round. The result was the famed MP-43. When Hitler saw the test prototypes he was pleased and supposedly said,"I like this assault rifle!". He especially liked the selector switch. He authorized more like this and the result was the MP-44, which later after the war, the Soviets used as the basis for the most famous firearm of all time--the AK-47. Next time some "expert" says so-and-so is an assault rifle, set them straight. No selector switch=no assault rifle.

Besides, there is pretty much no point in owning one in a state like CA since you really have no where to use it and cannot use it for protection. If you want an MP5 you can pick them up for around 1500 bucks. Uzi's are more.

The SKS requires no modification to put a removable mag in it. Only if you want to run AK mags through it then you have to have it modified.

I have had the oppisite experiance of Latamier. I own 2 sks's, both pre ban. one is almost stock I just added a synthetic stock and peep sites. The other is a paratrooper model. it has the shorter barrell, compensater/flash supressor and it will take AK 47 mags which is nice. Both of them are so much more accurate than my AK that I got rid of it. I think it really depends what you want it for. my stock sks is a hunting/camp gun. The short para model is pure assult weapon. What are you wanting to do with yours? I don't think the macs are very accurate and I detest people who "spray and pray" You don't need 70 rounds if you fuckin hit your target the first time.

I have found USA Mags to work best in the SKS. They have climbed in price BIG TIME since I last checked- thanks Klinton! They used to be around 30 bucks a piece. Now I see them selling for 130+ That is rediculous.

damn LA riots..... I can see why assult rifles are banned... and Mac-10s.. tech-9s.. they were/are used primarily in LA!

Actually the LA incident with the body armor clad bank robbers was what caused the Nazi cali police to really try to "crack down" on so called "assault weapons". Now every cop carried and AR-15 in their trunk. I had a Tec-9 for awhile, it was funny but I wouldn't bet my life on it. It was junk for the most part. Also, the real Ingram Mac-10 is .45 while the Mac-11 is 9mm and cheaper as well as smaller. They are fun to shoot.

Im surprized in the LA bank robbery, that know body took those guys out with high power rifles, It would of saved alot of time!

That is because they didn't have any. Thus we have cops running around with AR-15's in their trunk now for that very problem. I have to admit that I kind of admire bank robbers, of course Heat is one of my favorite movies. They took those guys out by shooting their legs.

Shit they should be carring a 300 win mag, that would detour the body armor bank robbers for doing that again!

Cops are notoriously bad shots in combat situations, they tend to spray and pray. Strange because many of them are excellent shots at the range. I worked with my buddy who is ex-delta force doing some room clearings and he was saying that when he trained cops they would hit civilian targets quite often until they got enough practice in clearing rooms. Nice. I hope cops never bust in where I am and spray the room. If they do you better duck and wave a huge white flag. Think South Park. I love the noise the military and cops make on south park when they are running.....brub brub brub brub..lol.

Rolgor, I use mine soley to hunt wild hogs. Getting back in the swamps I want a rifle that is dependable and cheap. The other nice thing about AK's and SKS is the ammo is virtually free.

Not Dogs, I said Hogs, as in wild boar. They are all over the place in the south, and if you own any hunting land you know what a mennace they are. Thats why you hunt them with an AK. If you come across 5-6 together, just start spraying away, kinda fun too. We do have problems with coyotes from time to time as well, so we just kill, them all. :chesty:
