Skipping breakfast?

Someone in the gym asked me the other day about how to lose some fat but not lose muscle. I asked him to tell me about his diet and he said, for the most part he eats really clean (sure, everybody says that).

I asked him what that meant and as he started to stutter, I said, "Tell me your usual daily breakfast." He told me he usually skips breakfast!!! He said he just got his coffee and that allowed him to cut some calories and still have energy to get him through the morning.

Holy shit! Well, there's your first mistake! I knew this wasn't going to be a short conversation!

I was reminded of this while reading through a website of one of our sponsors, and it's written pretty well there, so I will paste it here in case any of you (I'm sure not) are also skipping breakfast.

(from www.fitnessparadiseworld.com)

Skipping breakfast may seem to be a good idea, and indeed that seems to be the case for quite a lot of dieters. Some people just do not feel like eating from the first moment they wake up, while others see it as an easy way to avoid a few calories.

The problem with this though is that it is actually counterproductive to avoid breakfast. In fact, studies have revealed that far from causing you to lose calories skipping breakfast can greatly increase your chances of gaining weight.

There are several reasons for this. One of the main ones is that breakfast acts to fire up the body’s metabolism for the rest of the day. By delaying this process you will be less energetic and less able to cope with processing the foodstuffs and snacks that enter your body at a later time in the day

Also those who skip this very important meal at the start of the day, tend to end up eating more towards the end of it. Try to make sure that your breakfast is a healthy one avoiding fatty and processed foods, such as bacon or sausages. Stick to wholegrain cereals , whole meal bread, fruit and boiled eggs.

If I did that, I'd be irritable all day, and get fat. Your body will sense that it might be facing starvation, and will store everything it can.... as FAT. It's fairly well recognized that eating several (3 to 5) balanced, small meals a day, is best for weight loss and muscle gain. I eat at least 3 times a day, and concentrate my protein at breakfast and carbs for lunch, then smaller portions of protein and no fats for dinner. (dinner being my smallest meal of the day; so I don't go to bed hungry).

Just go ask the fattest, most out-of-shape people what they eat for breakfast, and they'll often say they skip breakfast and lunch, and then they bankrupt the nearest all-you-can-eat buffet for dinner. My foster father is 76, and got fat in his 50s. He used to be in shape, and active. He always ate 3 meals, with lunch being his bigger meal. Now he eats sugar cereal for breakfast, crackers & cheese for lunch, and something huge and deep-fried for dinner. I guess he just doesn't care, and now he's 5'8 at 240-ish; all belly. Very unfortunate, as now his back & knees are starting up on him. I tell him to at least eat that huge dinner earlier, but he won't. He eats it, then has dessert, lies on the couch to watch TV for an hour, and goes to bed. He complains to me all the time about being fat, and thinks I'm just magic and that my eating and workout habits have nothing to do with my 5.3% body fat, and my ability to do anything a high school athlete can do, at age 43.

ceo- what is your view on running when waking up without food?

well personally, I'm not a runner! lol! But, early AM cardio on an empty stomach can give the metabolism an extra kick start. This can even help when you are bulking by making you hungrier, enabling you to eat more.

Lord of the Rings had it right by eating Breakfast, and then second Breakfast. I do the same with lunch and dinner too.

Great points bro

lately for breakfast I have been making omelettes with ground beef and mozzarella cheese. I pre-cook about 2-3 lbs of ground beef and use about 4-5 ounces per omelette, 4 eggs, and a couple ounces of cheese. Nice protein packed breakfast.

I cant remember the last time i "skipped" Breakfast. People think the key to weight loss is starvation. well sure it is, guess they arent concerned about maintaining muscle
